President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday he had only discussed the 13th Amendment plus with Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna. The President said it was not up to him but the proposed Parliamentary Select Committee to determine the solution best suited for Sri Lanka.

He told a meeting of editors at Temple Trees, that he would meet party leaders soon to request them to nominate representatives to the PSC on national reconciliation.

The President recalled that in the Mahinda Chintana manifesto he had emphasised the need for a ‘fresh initiative after a careful perusal of the proposals tabled so far’.

“When I say proposals made so far it includes the 13th Amendment plus as well,” he said.

On the reported divisions on the 13th Amendment Plus by the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) constituent parties including opposition by the JHU and JNP, the President said, all of them have agreed to his proposal made in the Mahinda Chintana document and that is enough for him.

Commenting on an alleged TNA move to get the United States, Britain and a few other nations to support the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) demand for a political solution, President Rajapaksa said a single party, not even the SLFP, can dictate terms as to what should be the final solution.

“Only the select committee has been tasked with finding a solution and others can only make proposals. How can I market a solution to the masses if it is going to be rejected by a majority of Sri Lankans?” the President asked adding that no outsider can decide what is best for the Sri Lankan electorate.
“If I only adopt the TNA proposal I won’t be able to go beyond the Bentara River,” he said in a lighter vein.

On devolving police and land powers, he insisted that under no circumstances would police powers be devolved and in the case of land powers too, the final jurisdiction would continue to be vested with the President.

However the President emphasized he was keen on the best-possible workable solution to the political question as Sri Lanka could not afford to wage another war.

From your surname, did you also know the following. Sinhalese race were originally kandyans and consisted of kandyans only. Other low caste races who migrated mainly from South India took on the label of sinhalese through evolution and thanks to the British who wanted to dilute and break the ruling Kandyan Sinhalese class. So Karunarathnam, just because you have a M missing in your name, you dont have to show so much hatred to tamils.

Nicky Karunarathna Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:53 AM

Ok ok come like that Mr. President. Don't give anything to any segment of Sri Lankan society who utterly racist. Ask evey citizen to identify as Sri Lankan and not by their racist ethnicity. Sinhalese are the majority in the country by percentage wise. They have nowhere to go other than this small piece of real estate. That's the precise truth. Their language is not going take as language in any other country unlike Tamil in Tamil Nadu. During the JVP trouble when Sinahese got killed, nobody invited nor any UN talk about them. So Sinahlese are minority in the region(60million Tamil in Nadu and 85million in the world) and they can win demands from their homelands. Let 12% Tamils also share with majority and live anywhere they want like now and it was never change too time immemorial. They have no problems as such other than their racist attitudes calling them: Tamil and Tamil and nothing but the Tamil!

    chithranganie Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:53 AM

I agree. This 13th amendment is forced on Sri Lanka by Rajiv Gandhi with the intention of helping Tamils. Now TNA who were toeing the line with LTTE is asking the same demands. They must be thinking that we other Sri Lankans are fools. If they get all these powers, how about other races (Muslims/Burghers etc). Did our brave soldiers sacrified their lives to giving into LTTE demands which comes from TNA now.

    Thomas Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:58 AM

If the Executive President discussed 13 + , then it is devolution with Land, Police, Finance granted to the Provincial Councils ( Say State Govts. as in India ). VERY GOOD PROPOSALS

    wdasunil Tuesday, 31 January 2012 04:59 AM

Politicians, Yes they have two tounges.

    balu Tuesday, 31 January 2012 05:23 AM

    Leslie Tuesday, 31 January 2012 06:28 AM

Well done Mr. President we all are with you! Great statesman.

    Engineer Tuesday, 31 January 2012 06:20 AM

genius president. milked the indians like a cash cow by feeding them some lies they wanted to hear. so Krishna can now go back and report to his superior that his goal in his trip is complete. the president gets some bags of cash and everyone is happy. pure genius.

    hewa Tuesday, 31 January 2012 06:37 AM

THE ETHNIC ISSUE LOOKS LIKE A FOOT BALL! ALL THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE APPEAR TO BE JUST PASSING THE BALL TO EACH OTHERS COURT AND CHANCES OF FINDING A PRAGMATIC, SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO THIS CRUCIAL ISSUE IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE LOOK VERY BLEAK INDEED!

    john Tuesday, 31 January 2012 07:01 AM

The normal procedure at these high level meetings would be for the Indian delegation to write a press statement for their minister to read to the press, but before it is released they would discuss the contents with the Srilankan side to avoid any embarrassing public disagreement .

This situation reflects badly on both sides.

    honest Tuesday, 31 January 2012 07:30 AM

Why was a war going on for thirty years? Answer that first.

    xlntgson Tuesday, 31 January 2012 09:23 AM

    The war cost is high!
