Lakshman Hulugalle, the former Director General of Media Center for National Security who was removed from his posts under controversial circumstances was prevented from receiving a diplomatic posting when a minister opposed the move at the last week’s cabinet meeting, a government source said.

He said a much respected senior minister had expressed serious concerns when External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris’s cabinet memo to appoint Mr. Hulugalle to the Sri Lankan mission in Canberra was submitted in the cabinet.

According to the source, President Mahinda Rajapaksa had said he wanted to send Mr. Hulugalle where he could not be seen because keeping him in Sri Lanka was a huge embarrassment for the President.

He said none of the other ministers had uttered a word of support for Minister Peiris’s memo.

The source said that what had transpired was a sort of reprimand to the External Affairs Ministry for its poor performance at international forums including at Geneva.

The External Affairs Ministry is also under the spotlight for appointing non-career diplomats and political stooges to Sri Lanka’s foreign missions resulting in questions being asked about Sri Lanka’s failed foreign policy.  (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

Other than the president the whole world is quiet about Mr.Hulugulle. According to G.L. Peiris Theory, the whole world supports Mr.Hulugulle.

If the president does not want to see him, his name must be added to the banned terrorist List.

Sri Lanka's diplomats should show their presence more. Some are very silent when there are quite a lot of criticisms leveled at the government regards human rights and other matters which requires rebuttal. Notably HC in Canada seems to be non existent when so much was being said against Sri Lanka specially during the CHOGM.

Then people think that all our Ambassadors are sent to various countries since they are not fir\t enough to be in our society and also embarrassment to the president. So it will be a disgrace for few of our good ambassadors like Dr.Nonis.

    kayay Tuesday, 08 April 2014 06:41 AM

Minister GL should be removed from his position. He is a misfit and is a disgrace to all career diplomats. His recommendation of Hula to Canberra and the President's position that he wanted to send Hula to a place where he would not be an harassment to his excellency are both just to mislead the country and favour Hula

    Ranjith Tuesday, 08 April 2014 06:38 AM

Don't send him to Canberra. Send him to Ethiopia or Haiti as our Ambassador.

Now it is clear beyond any doubt the qualifications required by the rulers of this country for diplomatic postings. What a shame!

    mithra Tuesday, 08 April 2014 04:38 AM

GLP does not know what is happening in the country. His knowledge seems to be limited to the four walls of his office. If he reads news papers he would have come to know who and what Hulugalle was. I think both men are a real embarrassment to the HE the President and to our country.
