A official from the UN Human Rights office, Richard Bennett, is to head the staff supporting the three member panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and began meetings today, a UN Spokesperson said.
“The panel will continue to meet over the next three days to put together the small team that will be working on the panel, all team members will be full time members with prior experience, but this does not start the four month time line for the report they are to produce on the compliance of Sri Lanka's “Lessons Learnt” panel with international standards for inquiries into war crimes,” Spokesperson for Ban Ki Moon, Martin Nesirky told reporters in New York a short while ago.

From supporting Maoists in Nepal to supporting LTTE. Well, NY must be a better place to live than Kathmandu. 4 months? - OHCHR came to Nepal for a few months and stayed there for several years.

Andy, if it comes to a vote, China and Russia may very well abstain!

Why is the government so scared?
warnay Tuesday, 20 July 2010 09:06 PM

raj Tuesday, 20 July 2010 07:33 PM
There should be no difficulty in respecting and accepting this panel if the Sri Lankan government is genuine!
Yohan Tuesday, 20 July 2010 07:09 PM
"Well done" Wimal ... You have surely made things more obvious and difficult for your "masters." I am sure that your "fast unto death" would have made a difference.

Now it is just a matter of time ...

I am sure our great "patriot" WW will commit suicide, to force the UN to give-up investigations!
gunda Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:43 PM
'Thank you' WW. Both the panel and the world are now paying more attention to this task, after your drama. You have made them more suspicious of the Sri Lankan government's claims.
Andy Tuesday, 20 July 2010 06:34 PM
All this will be for nothing. So long as Russia and China keep supporting Sri Lanka, this will never advance into an investigative body. Whatever they "find," in this capacity, will never be enough. This will remain true since we have the support of the Non-Alligned Movement, which has already voted in our favour last year. Either way, this will only be until Ban Ki Moon comes for re-election, next year!
RajasH Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:51 PM
Initially it was only a 3 member panel. WW staged an abortive fast in protest and the panel get a team of support staff.Well done WW
Shovini Tuesday, 20 July 2010 05:35 PM
Well done. Go ahead.
