Traders staged a hartal in Vavuniya this morning against the alleged inaction of the police to conduct an inquiry into the abduction and later release of a businessman in the area for a Rs.600,000 ransom.

The Vavuniya traders closed shop during the hartal demanding the police to probe the abduction and arrest those responsible.

I think Gayan has a point. But whats the point if the Govt. officials and the police are behaving like the LTTE.
Where is the freedom from the LTTE if there is no difference?

Even during the LTTE period several times Hartal were held. But unfortunately didn't come to light since forces, police and the govt. supportive elements have threatened and stopped it halfway since all of them had share

    Geronimo Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:18 PM

    Oh, the police again!!!!!

Gayan Samarasekara Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:00 AM

If any Hartal was held, it should be against the LTTE as they were the rulers of Vavuniya those days. Then why do you say that they were stopped by the government bodies.. ?

    Faqi Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:03 AM

It's time law & order is established in the North & East. Its incumbent on the Police to win the hearts and minds of the people in these areas and bring normalcy as soon as possible.

    Farook Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:03 AM

So who suffered from the hartal? Think. If hartals can correct the police, we would have the best police in the world.

    kesavan Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:12 AM

Gayan....can you please educate yourself...this the problem with 99% sinhalese. Vavuniya town upto omanthai never has been under LTTE control. it was always under GOSL. You guys should be ashamed. We just live in a small country but dont even know or didn't even bother to know the truth.

    Wasantha Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:42 AM

If police did not show any interest to execute the duty, that means this was commited by a powerful element , who has the government backing. Do not forget that even though some former terrorists acted like reformists, still we cannot trust them 100%.

    Rattapakse Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:46 PM

Seems that the nation's corrupt Police services should be closed down,

    Arshad Tuesday, 27 July 2010 08:03 AM
