A one on one discussion was held today between SLMC leader MP Rauff Hakeem and President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Kandy regarding proposed constitutional amendments, the SLMC leader said.
Hakeem said that he would take up what transpired at this meeting, with the High Command of his party tomorrow. He said that his party would not oppose any proposal that would not have any implication on the Muslim community.
Asked whether the proposal to remove constitutional barriers for the President to contest for the third term would not have harmful consequences on his community, he answered that, substantially, there would not be any such problem.
The SLMC leader said that healthy compromise could be made with regard to the issues on good governance at this hour.
Asked whether he would meet the President again, he said that he would do so again only of the necessity arose. He also said that he met Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe prior to his meeting with the President.
“I have always made a pragmatic approach with the opposition,” he said.
The SLMC contested the April 8 election on the UNP ticket and won six seats and given two slots from the UNP’s National List.

RH is quite eloquent and talented, but he does not address the grassroot level of muslims, therefore the useless fellows make use of it.

What is this indecent hurry on the part of opposition parties rushing in for consultation on constitutional amendments. Is it a guise for an impending crossover.
