The government is to seek an interpretation on the 18th Amendment to the Constitution from the Supreme Court regarding the time period during which a Presidential Election could be held during the second term of office of the incumbent.

Accordingly, the government is to seek a direction from the Supreme Court due to the fact that the 18th amendment to the Constitution which removed the two term bar of a President, does not contain clauses which state the period during which a Presidential election could be called for during the second term in office.

Prior to the passing of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution the incumbent President could call for a Presidential election for the second term after concluding four years in office.

However, the 18th amendment does not specify the time period after which an election could be called for. (Ajantha Kumara Agalakada).

For our foreign friends who read these columns, this is what we term in Sinhala "Horage Ammagen Pena Aseema". A fruitless inquiry.

There is no need to consult the SC. Whatever the majesty thinks is what the SC is going to say. So why this farce? Waste of court time.
