Totally agree with what you say.

Price Controls are responsible for the shortage of chicken. Now the Government is interfering in the Rice market. Are we going back to the days of rice full of stones and continued shortages of food produced in Sri Lanka?
The solution is to impose a standard all inclusive duty of 50% on Rice & Chicken and allow imports during specified periods, when the Ministry of Consumer Affairs anticipates price rises. Ad-hoc solutions are not in the interests of the producers or the consumers.

End result is that mill owners got what they wanted. Price increase they were looking at is now official !!!

Back to the 'price control' days? I guess this maybe required because of certain unscrupulous traders and middlemen.

It is not possible to control the price with prevaling weather coz it will have an big impact on the furture harvest.

Someone from the Govt of SL is planning to make some extra bucks.

When the price is controlled make sure the quality is not sacrificed. Sell rice fit for human consumption and not for animal consumption

    suwantha Thursday, 09 December 2010 09:31 PM

minister of trade does not know how to control the prices of rice.becourse he is not a practical man for anything.

    Anemagekata Thursday, 09 December 2010 04:05 PM

This is what happens when politicians try to become economists overnight.

I see more chaos ahead, rice mills closing down, farmers committing suicide, etc.

    sltk2004 Thursday, 09 December 2010 01:28 PM

The problem is the sellers sell samba under different names. So they give one lower quality 'generic' samba at 70 and all other sambas with different names will be at higher prices.

Bluff Bluff Thursday, 09 December 2010 02:45 PM

Only the pasting of posters against the government can be controlled by law in this country!

    dfds Thursday, 09 December 2010 02:25 PM

This will only create shortages at legitimate sales outlets while a blackmarket would emerge.

    what about Basmathi ?

    meranchi Thursday, 09 December 2010 02:10 PM

trade minister playing game he doesn't know what to do joke and slip the problem this is waste this type of post given to low educated person

lalith Wije Thursday, 09 December 2010 01:56 PM

This is stupid as this is a supply and demand problem. You put up the price of flour to a prohibitive level, people stop buying flour and start buying rice and a shortage occurs and the traders will put up the price of rice when a shortage is created. You now price control it but people will continue buying rice and a severe shortage would occur. Then you have to import rice and you find yourself importing rice and flour and no foreign exchange is saved. You will go back to the 70s era of Sirima. Better reduce the price of flour. Lalith Wije.
