A few Tamil National Alliance (TNA) members of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) yesterday announced that the period May 13 to 19 would be marked as Tamil Genocide Week and began commemorating the dead with a function in Mullavaikkal in Mullaitivu District where the final battle was fought in 2009, a party member said.

The military defeated the LTTE on May 19 -- which is marked and celebrated as Victory Day in the south. TNA NPC member M.K. Sivajilingam told Daily Mirror that he regarded this period as the genocide week.

“We lit lamps and offered floral tributes at a small function in Mullavaikkal in Mullaitivu District. This week we will have commemorations throughout the north. We requested the party hierarchy to hold the main function on May 19,” he said.

He said he was backed by a few other members of the TNA in this exercise.

It is learnt that the TNA, as a party, has not organised any such commemoration. Yet its members will hold separate events to commemorate those in the north who died during the war that ended on May 19, 2009. (Kelum Bandara)

As a tamil I feel ashamed and apologetic at this time when the nation is trying to move towards true reconciliation under this new government. Even Mr Sampanthan and MA Sumanthiran are working hand in hand with the government to achieve this. But troublesome others within the TNA release these statements without realising these could be detrimental to the tamil community. Sivjilingam, suresh premachandran and ananthi sasisadharan should be given stern warnings to stop these actions and sacked if they refuse to comply.

Let by gone be by gone. It is a new era. Please do not let the past ruin the future of this country. Please, please, please whether you live in the South, North, East, West or abroad, forget about the past. Give truth to your heart. Go to Madhu Shrine on the 30th of May and embrace your brethren with love and kindness. Let there be peace in our mother nation. Thank you all of you.

Wesley, being a tamil, your way of thinking about this whole issue is very great and an excellent example for the rest. The sad story is that some of the people has already forgotten that we ever had a problem.

Reconciliation is two sided, one should not expect the reforms only from the Sinhalese, we as a nation had understood that we had hard times that came to an end in 2009. Lot many people lost their lives, but as a responsible government it was the correct action to finish the war at that time. However celebrating it as a heros day wasnot a correct move by the previous government. Mind you during the uprising of 71 and 87 many Sinhalese lost their lives. Many more than that were lost during the final war in 2009 but nobody made any issue out of it, as it was the Sinhalese killing the Sinhalese. They too fought for a course they though right and lost their fight. If we are genuinely trying to reconcile we should not have heros days nor do we have these so called genocide weeks. Those who died from both side died for a course they believe was right, so to do justices to both side we should choose the middle path not the extreme that would hurt the other races feelings. That is

It is better to ignore them. People moved on and have no time for them. They expect the state to act in the way of Gota to earn brownie points with Pro Tiger Diaspora.

Ignoring the lunatic fringe is the best.
