Former army Chief and opposition Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka and his media secretary Senaka de Silva were arrested by the military police a short while ago, opposition Member of Parliament Mano Ganeshan told Daily Mirror online.

Military spokesman Major Prasad Samarasingha confirmed that the General has been arrested from his Colombo office for committing military offences.

Meanwhile the memory chips of the cameras of the Daily Mirror photographer and an AFP journalist covering the arrest of the General were confiscated by the military who had surrounded the General's office.

This is a dame shame. I didnt know the leader of my party will stoop to such a low level act. I categorically condemn this action. With this action, we are placing our country on par with some of the banana republics around. Not arresting Sarath much before, obviously smells bad intention now. Now the oppersition is going to gain on the General Elections. This is not what i wished.

It's a sad day in our country, because of a bad decision taken by our higher authorities. The future of this country looks very bleak.

'Asking and eating,' by the government.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 08:07 PM

    Monday, 08 February 2010 08:11 PM

The way things are going, all those who voted for SF too, will soon be arrested for 'being a threat to national security.' That means some 38% of our population will soon be in prison. 'Beautiful' democracy!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 04:59 PM

One reason for this is to prevent the election petition being filed.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 04:59 PM

Mahinda you did a foolish thing and the reward will follow you soon. Better you stay in Russia.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 11:59 PM

These 'games' are simple to our General. A lot more 'games' will be played with him, in due course.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:00 PM

He made one mistake, that is "brought the truth to the light".
God will punish MR and brothers for the killing of million innocent civilans and behave like this.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:06 AM

This is power madness of the 'Maharaja family'!

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:06 AM

'Maharaja' has 'kept his hand' on the wrong person. It will not be easy for him to runaway now.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:04 PM

Good move now for you, but bad days for your boss very soon. Tell him to stay in Russia to save him.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 11:50 AM

He was a great soldier..good @ war.Done his 100% in the war. But he shouldn't bring war secrets into politics. In tht point of view he has done a big mistake..

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:20 AM

Like a 'BABA,' went to Russia!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 08:46 PM

ALL SHOULD REFUTE THIS TAKING REVENGE, FROM OUR HERO, GENERAL FONSEKA.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 08:51 PM

If MR pretends that he knows nothing, then he is not fit to govern this country.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:33 AM

"GOD IS GREAT. THOSE WHO LIVE BY THE DHARMA ARE PROTECTED BY THE DHARMA.-LORD BUDDHA.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:00 PM

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:27 AM

We will have to follow the theory - 'TIT FOR TAT'!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:30 PM

What a 'tribute' to a real war hero? God will punish ... for this shameless act!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:31 PM

A sad state of affairs ! I salute Gen. SF for what he has done for the sake of rest of his countrymen. If anyone says that the political leadership is the key to a war victory then ask yourself why Bush failed - they have given the best to their forces, yet the war is not over ! All you need is a military leader who could marshal his men, in the correct direction.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:32 PM

This will be added to the "Chinthanaya" - "Revision 1."

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:33 PM

Cowards ! Shylocks ! They want to hide their acts! So, now we want the wolrd to intervene, to save domocracy in our motherland !

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:35 PM

You arrest only the true patriot, while the actual offenders are at large! I hope you literally 'rot in hell'!

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 06:09 AM

No God will bless the opposition but the Devil!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:36 PM

I think it's time for everyone to be united. Singhalese, Tamils and Muslims of this country need to work together to save democracy! We need to save our future generations!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:37 PM

The punishment will come from the Devas ! They will never be able to run away when the Devas start sending their 'hot bolts' to the corrupt lot !

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:10 PM

SF was also operating from Colombo - not the battlefield It was with MR that he first went to Vaunia

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 05:08 PM

but visiting there is only a dream without SF. He is the person who did 75% of the game.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:40 PM

It is no doubt an extremely sad day for the majority of us Sri Lankans. This is clearly the end of democarcy, in Sri Lanka ! Most of the law abiding people have been reduced to being passive onlookers, unable to speak-up or act, in accordance with our conscience. For, if we do, we have to be ready to face dire consequences. To top it all, it is sad that we Sri Lankans, and most notably the Sinhalese, never want to experience the infinite power of uniting to speak with one voice and send out clear signals against the high-handed actions of our mighty rulers, who are intoxicated with their own power.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:40 PM

Sarath Fonseka winning the general election? What a joke! And you want the Americans to intervene and pressure the government? Look man ... sorry to say ... but MR doesn't care about the useless Americans ... God bless the true patriotic leaders MR and Gota ... Bravo!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:42 PM

Absolutely. SF was a threat to national security!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 09:09 PM

History will definitely repeat in the future. God bless Sri Lanka!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:42 PM

This is the time for the Sri Lankan people to act. God help Sri Lanka!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:42 PM

It was MR who guided the Army to victory. SF was just a person who took orders from his leaders, Gota and MR.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 09:13 PM

You are correct. Why no action taken aginst hit-man, 'King of Kelaniya'?

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:46 PM

I think it is SF's big mouth that is responsible for his arrest. Only a couple of hours before his arrest did he tell reporters that he was ready to give evidence regarding 'war crimes.'

    Monday, 08 February 2010 09:16 PM

Karuna, Pillayan et al, why no charges against them?

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:47 PM

MR has saved the entire military from being blacklisted, internationally. See what Fonseka was going to do: General Sarath Fonseka speaking to journalists in Colombo on Monday said, "I am not going to save anyone who has committed war crimes."

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:22 PM

This is the beginning of the end of both the parties.

Sarath Fonseka will prove to be dangerous than Praba

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:47 PM

No one really knows why SF was arrested. People can say anything, but until proven, with evidence, no one is guilty! The same applies to the allegation of cheated election results.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:23 PM

MR will re pay near future for this

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:48 PM

Is this how we, as an educated nation with good traditions, show gratitude to a person who bravely halted a thirty year old terror war?

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:48 PM

SF, we're with you ... We know you have the courage to get through this.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:49 PM

Now the next news will be that SF tried to run away and the military shot him ... END of SF ...?

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:49 PM

    'Nahi werena werani ...'

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:23 PM

Feel very sorry but He asked for it, even after the election he didn't keep his mouth shut.

Slept with dogs, wake with makka.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:49 PM

At this point, if we don't take any action, we better forget democracy and all be slaves ...

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:51 PM

MR'S BIGGEST MISTAKE. By arresting Sri Lanka's war hero, MR HAS INSULTED MOTHER LANKA!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:24 PM

you mean bad days for the boss of 58% of this country??

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:51 PM

The whole world must condemn this undemocratic act of revenge, taken against a presidential candidate who conducted a very clean, honest and civilized election campaign, right throughout.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:24 PM

Rajapakshe its not too late now. You better surrender unto General and beg his pardon.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 09:28 PM

Whatever political parties we represent, Sarath Fonseka, is a National HERO ! ! !

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:25 PM

u mean evidence ! so there is a war crime ! Oh Gota may god help you ...

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:25 PM

this is a grave error by MR.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 12:50 PM

Our leaders are petty minded and selfish and power hungry.
They do not know to respect their own kith and kin. They show off from what type of stock they come in.
Where is righteousness of this so called BUDDHIST COUNTRY ????????
If winter comes can spring be far behind?

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:25 PM

yep. you are correct. He can be court marshalled. its according to law

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:56 PM

If Mahinda won the election in a fair and free manner, why is it that the defeated candidate, Fonseka, is being harassed like this?

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:32 PM

No one above the law. If he served for Army he is responsible to act according to Army law. He can not tell what happened while he was at Army even though he is retired now. He can not go away with all is unwanted remarks and acts just because of his try to become the President. Kohomada Kema???? Athi Vishistai Sir!!!!!!!!!!!
    Mage Ratata Theruwan Saranai!!!!!!!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 06:56 PM

God will deliver justice to the IDI AMIN family and goons!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:27 PM

This is what is desrved! Hunderad times he has been advised not to get trapped by UNJVP idiots. Now he has to pay. Sorry dear General!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:27 PM

This is unbelievable. We have eradicated terrorism as MR says but Lanka is less free now than ever before.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 07:25 AM

Please do not call yourself a Sri Lankan. People like you are a disgrace to any country you live in.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:28 PM

    for which purpose....?
    aneyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.......

    Monday, 08 February 2010 07:00 PM

Well ... we have 58% in SL who have given them a license to kill the sprit, of this great NATION!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 07:00 PM

Arranged the plan and vanished to Russia, to show that he did not know anything about this. People, do the needful, at the general election.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 07:01 PM

'Rajakam keruwath, kalakam palade'! Get ready!

    Wednesday, 10 February 2010 07:26 AM

    Idi Amin, in action!

    Monday, 08 February 2010 07:01 PM

We have to wait and see! Everybody see what "BBC" reports: "I am definitely going to reveal what I know, what I was told and what I heard. Anyone who has committed war crimes should definitely be brought into the courts" - Gen Fonseka.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:30 PM

Feel sorry for your Big man who did a wrong thing and regretting now. He is not wise enough... need to learn more about Politics. He has to face the music when he comes to SriLanka. bear it.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:35 PM

General or no General will have to face the consequesces if any crime is committed.Big mouth thru hatred and swollen headed attitude destroyed the General once highly commended by the public. Considering SF's utterences on public platfors during election campaign proves that worse things would befall on many Sri Lankans had SF won.
Any way feel sorry for this Hero who was made a Zero by power hungry opposition.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:35 PM

Shame. Now you can see who is the real Amin.Death of democracy.Leave this country ASAP.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 10:12 PM

Those who take-up swords: die by the swords! When people are drunken with power, they do not know what they are doing.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 12:50 PM

If u want to carry your future politics to forward u should be friend with gota otherwise same thing for next military general also.(MR a good person),This arrest not a political move this is in-between two US citizens problem. One think Gota became DS
Over SF(that was ego problem)......So dont care this is not a military act 51 but this is a code of contact in between gota&SF............The shame is our war hero& military image spoiling by dirty politicians.........I thing our military should not involve in political activities....

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:36 PM

Sonali, when he directed the army to liberate NE from the LTTE was that a good move or bad move. The real traitors are those who are happy and celebrating the Generals arrests. You are one those Sudu kotiyas. Damn with those having short memories.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 10:19 PM
