French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, in a statement to mark World Humanitarian day today, has raised the death of 17 aid workers in Sri Lanka during the war and noted that the killers have yet to be identified.

The 17 aid workers of Action Against Hunger or Action Contre La Faim (ACF) were killed in Mutur in 2006 and both the government and the LTTE blamed each other at the time for the deaths.

“We also remember the 17 members of Action Against Hunger who were executed in 2006 in Muttur in Sri Lanka; their murderers have still not been found. The security of humanitarian personnel is a priority for France. The attacks against them negate the solidarity which forms the basis of humanitarian action. They represent a scourge for the international community and all States must take appropriate measures to deal with them. That is why France is determined to try and strengthen the security of humanitarian personnel, notably at the next United Nations General Assembly,” the French Foreign Minister said in his statement today. What do you expect from this lawless land?

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR SRI LANKA'S LOSING GSP+! BUT THE BLAME IS ALWAYS ON OTHER COUNTRIES OR ON THE UNP.

Another bombardment to the country to deal with and tackle with much diplomacy as European Countries are quite unlike ours when comes things like this. They may drag this incident for many more years till a satisfied response is received by the parties concerned.

    Hundreds..? you mean thousands.....!

Everybody knows who perpetrated the crimes, but as usual we are pointing fingers at Iraq and Afghanistan and trying to cover up our crimes.

Concerned Citizen Friday, 20 August 2010 08:16 AM

Let that be concluded by the Commission appointed to inquiry into these deaths. If it was the LTTE, the govt. should have no reason not to support the Commission.

    MK Friday, 20 August 2010 08:18 AM

When the aid workers were killed, or when the LTTE claimed that the hospital in batti was bombed by government, UNP also released media statements accusing the government. And Ranil was going all over the world saying that 'SRI LANKA IS A FAILED STATE" ... so obviously one of the main reasons for us to lose the GSP+ is because of UNP.

Concerned Citizen Friday, 20 August 2010 08:19 AM

If we are seeking aid from the EU, there is no point in asking them to look at Iraq and Afganistan. We need to put our house in order as thats our responsibility. We cannot live forever on the fame gained from defeating the murderous LTTE.

    demon Friday, 20 August 2010 08:33 AM

please raise your voice for the aid workers who had been killed in Palestine...Iraq and Afghanistan...
