A A A

The government today revealed that there was an attempt by General Sarath Fonseka to stage a 'Russian style' coup against the government following the recent Presidential elections.

Cabinet Spokesperson and Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, speaking to reporters claimed that Fonseka had plans to appoint ‘Bolshevik Committees’ at every state institution to carry out routine work after assassinating President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his bothers Gotabhaya Rajapakse and Basil Rajapakse.

The government had already arrested several people including some ex-military officers over their alleged involvement in the coup attempt. (SAJ)

    ha ha really?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 04:51 PM

God wouldn't bless untill we change ourselves and reject the politicians with criminal and violent background. We repeatedly proven ourselves as stupid enough to be cheated by politicians.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:11 AM

This is the conspiracy made by the government to arrest Mr fonseka. This will be the biggest mistake ever done.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:13 AM

Innocent Fonci... ur day dreams are over now, pls fly to US, thats the best place for u rather than ruining the good name of our Mother Lanka!!!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:17 AM

    Frankly very hard to believe.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:17 AM

Sotp crying of a coup that wasn’t there and Gen. Fonseka was not capable of conducting and get on with governing the country and controlling rising inflation, stop fighting among the Sinhalese and march forward as 62 years passed and we are sill in the 3rd world.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:19 AM

I cannot understand why Government delaying taking the main culprit into custody

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:20 AM

Now talk about development & Minority right.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:20 AM

    Russian fairy tale

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:21 AM

Time to nominate Yapa and MR's Lankan government for Oscars for best fiction script! How long are they going to fool the people?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:21 AM

BEST DIRECTION... FINE STORY...SHALL V APPLY DIS 4 AN OSCAR AWARDS?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:22 AM

In the name of fairness please provide the facts to back up these claims rather than making public claims against another individual.Ministers need to be extra careful when making allegations.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:22 AM

What a load of crock! Yapa is writing fairy tales. MR won the election. Now move on and fulfil the promises he made. The people are suffering.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 01:02 PM

Wara seems to have got his wires crossed! It is the 60% uneducated who got it wrong!!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:24 AM

Mr. Minister do not tarnish the image of un blemish General ,and other democratic leaders who supported him

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:24 AM

Ya Right! If he wanted to do that, he could have done it earlier! Why so much unprofessional and uneducated statements on him, specialy by the government? They are guilty and try their very best to make SF stay away from the whole scene, so that they can do what ever they want. Wha a Shame!!!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 01:09 PM

Obviously because SF won but was cheated - scared he will win again.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 01:13 PM

    That's why M R is visiting Russia

    Friday, 05 February 2010 01:29 PM

Just these are tit and tats and no evidence at all

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:40 AM

If government know this then why dont they arrest SF

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:42 AM

Today MR is the president of SL and throughout the election campaign he managed to land 6 million voters by spreading these baseless propaganda.
90 percent of those 6 million voted NOT based on MR's manifesto, economic policies or good governance. Those are 'Thank you' votes or victims of false propaganda similar to this. But I don't call them as 'traitors' as we are in a democratic society, so we should be able to vote whoever we think is the best for the job.
If SL governement has hard evidence on this why don't they arrest culprits, after all MR won by 1.8million majority.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:42 AM

This is another blaten lie to divert the current situation. If he wanted to have a coup he would have done it long long time ago. He is a General with principle and disipline.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:49 AM

Havent the government made up enough lies to rig the election? leave our general alone!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:52 AM

Looks like some thing in the pipeline, the stage shoow will unfold soon. There are good writers of thrillers Soma... Jack.... etc. there is no ethics in this country. If judiciary fails then everything else will fail.....................

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:55 AM

Mr Yapa, Don't you'll feel shame?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:56 AM

why they crying after that victory.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    there is something ?????????????????

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:56 AM

Ha . ha ha ha.... Minsister Yapa should have told this on April 1st. At the begening SF was compared to Idi Amin, then Hitler and now Stalin ??? What next ??? May be Mugabe Robert (MR)

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:58 AM

yeah right! is that why MR has gone to Russia?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:03 AM

Thank goodness this guy wasn't given the chance!!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:03 AM

Who will blieve this...? He could have done it, if he wished, while he was in command.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:06 AM

Except for assassinating the President and his brother, the Bolshevik style committees at our state institutions may be a good idea. These places might finally get their act together in such an event.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:06 AM

Instead of accepting the defeat in the elctions, don't fabricate stories. You loser should be vigilent without bringing curse for yourself.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:07 AM

Uttering nonsones...!!!! accept that General Fonseka legally the winner and you are the loser Mahinda.,

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:10 AM

    ‘Bolshevik Committees’ ?

So the plot is now clear. The government is scheming to do away with SF by alienating him from the West and then do whatever it likes. Very clever plot but nobody will buy that!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:10 AM

nice series of jokes for the past couple of weeks for the people of this nation!! this can be rated 3 Star out of 5!!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 02:54 PM

This govt, is pathetic, its disgusting to see how they make story after story, so if SF, was going to appoint Bolsheviek committies, what do we call the ones we have now? Ethiopian committies?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:26 AM

He can play any styles. Which style you want Mr. President?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:27 AM

    Why they haven't arrest SF

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:28 AM

WHY DONT THEY ARREST THE GENERAL. WE WILL SEE THE FUN AND GAMES IF THEY DO THAT. WHY ARE YOU TELLING THESE THINGS TO THE MEDIA. ANURA APRIYADARSHANA KAPA , gO TO COURTS AND FILE A CASE. Friday, 05 February 2010 03:14 PM

Thought this is going to be an action story. Now this minister has spoiled the whole thing and it is going to be a comedy. Mr. Yapa this is very cheap quality and immatured stuff coming from a government minister. Please note that foreign political analysts are reading our newspapers and you are providing free samples of the intellect of people who are running this country. Apey ratata deyiyangema pihitai.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:19 PM

    what a Joke MR ?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:24 PM

We have enough joakers in the cabinet now, that is why Sri Lanka is like today, nothing else. People have to understand these jokes. Do not forget the "KAALAAMA SOOTHRAYA".

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:37 AM

First of all it was not a coup, and I dont think SF had idea of even arresting MR and brothers, forget about killing them.
Bolshevik committee??? yes, but dont call it a Bolshevik commitee, it would be Presidental Commitee.

He had idea of putting a presidental commitee to every state institution, to oversee the corruption of ministers and as far as public is concerned it is a good idea because ministers dont have free ride with money. SF knew ministers will be corrupted politicians from whom he got support. so he wanted to put an end to corruption. I think that was a JVP idea.

the government should not come down to this level of misguiding public, by doing so ,they are doing more harm to the country.

MR won, SF lost that is all, the country has to move on, whoeve deserve will come to power next.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:37 PM

EVEN THOUGH sf IS A ELDERLY PERSON HE GOT LOT TO LEARN ,AT LEAST TO SPEAK

    Friday, 05 February 2010 10:51 AM

    This is a bad Joke..

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:41 PM

Two Yapa's have become good entertainers of M R'S Government

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:42 PM

Maybe this why MR is going to Russia tomorrow.LOL
Stop all these fairy stories and get down to work. You have fooled the people enough ,now start working.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:05 AM

ha ha ha... its more like that is what happening at the moment...

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:07 AM

    Mr. Murder...

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:08 AM

It is very easy to mislead uneducated poor people in Sri Lanka. Could any one imagine why SF did not do this while he was in the army. Why he resigned from his post to become a politician. No one can lie for ever. One day people will realise the truth.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:09 AM

no coup please. even corrupted democracy is good. If govenment militarising the politics this would be the result. Fonseka spoke politics when he was in military. that time itself, ranil ponted out this. but same Ranil joint fonseka. UNP should contest itself, without fonseka this problem would not arise. It was a foolish thing to allow fonseka as common condidate. even fonseka not intend to do coup. it was totally wrong foolish Ranil allowed fonseka as common condidate. Ranil Please think now. be a stong leader. do not be a dance for all the tunes. we need stong govenment ans stong opposition in a democracy. no fonseka.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 02:48 AM

    Mr Yapa,
Better to know your history before uttering statements.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 02:56 AM

Another man (BR) who's intellect is based on Hollywood motion pictures is ruling the country after the previous one died (who's intellect was based on motion pictures). What a fortunate little paradise.

    Saturday, 06 February 2010 11:56 AM

Govt. of Sri Lanka little by little getting ready to put Gen. Sarath Fonseka behind bars for things even he doesn't know. because of Human Right violations Sri Lanka will be denied GSP+ present Govt should be held responsible for this Mr. Minister people of this country knows what Gen SF did and not we will not be fooled by you, you can't fooled all the people all the time Mr. Minister

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:15 AM

    Send him to angoda

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:53 PM

President of Hyde Park = SF. Sorry Fonseka

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:19 AM

so that is what's happening now I suppose... MR or SF.. anyone would have done the same.. long live our democracy(btw, that which does not exist or never existed)....

    Friday, 05 February 2010 03:56 PM

SF is a honest , straight forward person. That is why in advance he said , Police officers or who ever who brake rules will be punished once he come into power. That is to discipline them before they do it. If he was a real culprit he would have kept everything in his mind and taken revenge. Don't you all know those who openly talk do not act that way and those who do not openly talk act behind the backs.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:22 AM

What a shame he couldn't make it, after all we have tried all kinds of government and nothing had proved to be good for the masses but for the leaders.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:22 AM

another story...Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa is becoming a good joker...future SL mr BEAN...

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:25 AM

If this is true, SF is the worst politician in SL History

    Saturday, 06 February 2010 12:35 PM

Laughfter is the best medicine, as we are short of good medicines in our hospitals, Minister is busy with elections and what not

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:26 AM

What a plan yeah? SF still cannot take the defeat. Will his protests work?Come on - give up

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:29 AM

If he wanted to do that, he could have done this when he was in army! Government is trying to make us fool! What a shame government !!!!!!!!!!!!!!-

    Friday, 05 February 2010 04:12 PM

wara, do you really believe that phony result???

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:30 AM

Yappa.... eppa borru kiyanda. However, if SF has that plan that is welcomed

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:34 AM

Good show..... restless nights general created for all the ruthless .

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:36 AM

Mr. Yapa are you so afraid to General SF. Baya gullah.....

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:36 AM

This government is giving us a 'laugh a day' Thnkak you MR.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:37 AM

if you have full evidence, then why don't you arrest him ?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:43 AM

I wonder who is the fox in sheep's clothing...!!!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:50 AM

Still paranoid about SF ! ...Po.. Poo... Pooo.. poooo.....When will these conspiracy theories end? This was the main reason for SF resign as the Overall commander.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:56 AM

Very true! A few days after May 19th, when the whole country, including the 300,000 displaced victims, are breathing a long sigh of relief and the armed forces were buoyant and really geed up, I'm sure SF only had to say the word. It would have been a perfectly bloodless take over. He didn't ; because he was an Officer and a true patriotic gentleman. For that, the people are paying a heavy price.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:34 PM

May be, that's why the President is going to Russia, to learn how to defeat this 'coup'? Ha!

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:57 AM

    SF go to hell ...
    MR you are our king

    Friday, 05 February 2010 11:57 AM

Yes Chathula, it's very easy to mislead uneducated people. That;s why he was managed to get 40%.

    Saturday, 06 February 2010 12:12 AM

And here we go again, same old story, same old song, only "Russia" has been added !

    Friday, 05 February 2010 12:11 PM

Just like the government is asking proof of voting irregularities. The govt should provide proof of all these conspiracy and coup stories. So please stop trying to fool everyone. You can fool the man in the village but the city folk are too wise for your foolishness. But u would not worry about people like us, since the villagers are foolish enough to still worship you.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:50 AM

    The story telling continues .........

    Friday, 05 February 2010 12:13 PM

What is wrong ?? if the election was actually won with 60%, why is govt such a sore loser? Why is he still scared of Sarath Fonseka?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:53 AM

    What a wonda?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:55 AM

Yet another sequel to a popular movie after "Conspiracy Theory". This one is to be called "Russian Roulette - 2". Even a lie repeated ad nauseum looks like the truth to those who propagate it and their blind followers who only watch and listen to disinformation disseminated by the State Media. Go on, at this rate we might come up with an award winning script for an Oscar award.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:55 AM

He must be accountable for coup crime and also to Hi corp commission crime.
This can not be simply let out.
The biggest cirme is betryaing our forces by bogus alligation of white flag stroy.
He must produce before military court and meet out maximum punishment.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:56 AM

Just wondering why SF is not arrested yet if he was planning a coup while so many other ex military officers are arrested for their alleged involvement .

    Friday, 05 February 2010 12:21 PM

Stop scolding SF and start working

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:57 AM

The Only honourable thing SF can now do is ADMIT HIS STUPIDITY AND APOLIGISE TO THE PRESIDENT AND ASK FOR HIS PARDON.

HE MUST DROP HIS INFLATED EGO NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

    OTHERWISE HE MAY GO "TROPPO"

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:58 AM

ONLY GOD KNOWS WHO IS LYING AND WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH. GOD BLESS OUR NATION FOR THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH TO PREVAIL.

    Monday, 08 February 2010 05:52 AM

So many allegations against SF - not one proven. WHAT AN EFFICIENT CID/GOVT. Worse than Bush invading Iraq like a bull in a china shop - still searching weapons of mass destruction, in the axis of evil. MR hs Bush style - either yu are with me or not with me!! Where the Metha & Karuna from the Buddhists of SL?

    Friday, 05 February 2010 08:59 AM

Who thinks and comes up with these exotic names for imaginery coups that SF is supposed to have planned. Wow these guys have some imagination. Lies, Lies and More Lies to come, to keep an unpopular regime in power.

    Friday, 05 February 2010 12:24 PM

    now said, you SF follower

    Friday, 05 February 2010 09:01 AM

Where can we buy this "fiction"? What book stall? Is it available with the Government Publishing Unit, Maya Avenue Colombo 05? If not where?
