Detained former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka is attending the inaugural session of the seventh Parliament. Fonseka was reportedly driven to Parliament under tight security.

He was elected to the new Parliament at the recent General Elections. Fonseka is being probed over an alleged illegal arms deal and other allegations.

Speaking in Parliament the General said that he was being detained undemocratically and urged the Speaker to intervene in his matter.

You dont know what really happend there Lancer

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:00 AM

Congratulations and salute of the nation! Take utmost care and think twice before U open your mouth. Learn politics and politricks to survive in this battle field.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:04 AM

SF should learn to talk calmly in parliament - take note of how Arjuna, our Captain Cool, speaks. Or Vijitha Herath. But dont speak the same way or worse than Anura Kumara D. GOOD LUCK TO YOU IN PARLIAMENT - IF NOT FOR YOUR BRILLIANT MILITARY STRATEGY THE WAR WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN WON & WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO WALK FREELY ON THE ROADS.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:00 AM

A war hero who became The Biggest Traitor of the Nation in Parliament.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:12 AM

Ha Ha Ha.. What kind of dreams you have my friend. Why are you so afraid of SF. Try to clean up your life from bad deeds.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:01 AM

    god bless u General

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:05 AM

    Feel sorry about your ignorence

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:03 AM

It is not about Mahinda or SF.
SF was good soldier during the war, but betrayed heroic forces and made profit through his son in laws company.
Mahinda is the true leader who directed all resources within his powers to defeat terrorism.
SF was a hero, but failed to maintain and betrayed mother lanka for dollars and political power.
Those who betray my country should pay maximum price for it.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:06 AM

His health was a problem a few days/weeks ago - bronchitis & pneumonia are like that - it reaches a climax & then recovers almost as soon as it sets in.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:04 AM

General Fonseka is the Unstoppable Lion of Sri Lanka.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:13 AM

    True, 100%.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:08 AM

UNP joined an alliance to back Fonseka at the presidential election but went their separate ways at the general election. I am sure the General & his group would see eye to eye on the same issues and stay together to oppose what is wrong - stress for good governance and free the country of corruption & thuggery.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:05 AM

    ANURA,
IT IS NOT A BIG DEAL TO ENTER PARLIMENT THESE DAYS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE ETHICLLY BANKRUPT. WHERE IS DANUNA ,WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM AND FROM WHERE DID YOU GET INEXPLICABLE AMOUNTS OF MONEY???
    CAN YOU EXPLAIN IN PARLIAMENT.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:14 AM

When the change comes, he will lead the nation.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:06 AM

    Congratulations sir !

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:07 AM

its would be better if they can give the opposition leader post to him...all the best general....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:17 AM

Looks like your astrological stars are shining. Forget the army stars now Sir.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:09 AM

Bad days will end soon, you will shine in glory , those who redicule you may fall on your feet for survival

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:17 AM

    GOOD News

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:13 AM

After a long time he was able to see the clouds. this is how the present govt treats a 30 year war hero.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:13 AM

The man who never bends for anything,i like your attitude, good bless you sir

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:13 AM

what nonsense . as if MR can interfere with the law to THAT extent. When others come to PArliament in prison vans how can MR stop SF coming to parliament. Had he done so he would have proved to the whole world that this country was 100% undemocratic & even HE cant stoop to that level.

so nice to see u in parliament our gallant soldier & i hope these ridiculous allegations against u will be thrown to the dust bin by the civil court.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:10 AM

    Anura,
yes General, good that you came to parliment. Can you explain what happened to Danuna. Why is he absconding?
What about the inexplicable amount of money you got ?
Please explain in the parliament as a true patriot.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:27 AM

Do you know how many registered voters there are in colombo?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:10 AM

Congratulations Great commander, you have a "Bright Future" in Srilanka," The Whole Worls is With You Commander."

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:31 AM

    Reborn.....LION of MotherLanka........Wish u good luck....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:12 AM

Fonseka will try to break the world record of Ranil as the longest serving opposition leader.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:13 AM

Man this is gross! Sarath F took a 365 turn after the war! He is the one who was bribed and they found money in his SIL's Safe! Why is he absconding then?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:13 AM

JVP should give thanks to MR, why I told that. unless SF is detained you wouldn't get even one seat in the Parliament.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:14 AM

Sir ...Pls make sure its payback time for them ?........

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:38 AM

I know who is Gen Fonseka but I do not know who this Nishantha is?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:15 AM

MagodisThuma, A/C and Super meals are ok as long as you bow down to unfair and undemocratic acts. But when you talk for the common man it becomes unheard of. The above is the definition of hypocrisy.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:18 AM

    Well said Lancer !!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:19 AM

Nobody knows !!!! I think only you know that and not even Ranil or Mangala !!!! Ha... Ha ....!!!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:20 AM

Undemocratic ways?? Havent you read the sunday times political columns on what this man has done?? read and educate yourself first Mr Imesh.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:20 AM

Asoka, are you trying to be an All Island JP by stooging? Good Luck to the General. My regards to the Government for being sensible.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:22 AM

VERY TRUE WELL SAID.ALL OTHERS ARE CROOKES

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:49 AM

Overall only 36% cast their votes to UPFA. 45% did not vote, balance went to opposition and other small parties. Did UPFA really get the mandate by majority? If UNP had alliance with JVP, one horse race!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:50 AM

Dear General, congratulations, and we look forward to see an excellent parliamentarary career that sets an example to the others.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:52 AM

Fonseka is just memeber of the parliment.Still a kid in politics.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:24 AM

Good Luck sir hope justice is served.......!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:24 AM

You would be ungreatfull if White Flag story went as they planned.
Thoug he is great commander but SF has failed after he entered to politice.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:25 AM

Is that why he threw away the green card and came back to SL when he was about to be questioned by US officials. But Gotabaya Rajapakse answered US questions for hours

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:57 AM

Foni can live a luxury life now..that is what he wanted all the way. Only fools think him as the voice of the people.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:26 AM

yes......like he opened his mouth in Presidential Election

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:57 AM

This is not about showing MR's leadership or mighty power. It is a fundamental right within democratic framework to allow a member elected by voters to be sworn in and continue to practice as a Member of Parliament. Do not think MR could have deprived General SF of that. Of course the whole civilized world was watching at this and MR knew exactly the consequences of it if he did not make the way for General to enter into the Parliament. If you do not know that few years ago India allowed ‘bandit queen’ Poolan Devi to enter into and function as a Member of Parliament while she was serving in the prison.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:32 AM

Also the editor, do not you have some idea to edit when someone disrespect a person's Name ?? What is Ponsi ??? there are hundreds of thousands of Fonseka's in Sri Lanka and this is an insult for them as well. There are so much of websites where you can comment with any foul language even sometimes you cannot read. We thought DM is different to them ??

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:26 AM

In the short term cannot expect too much from him since he is mere MP in the opposition.
Anyway, happy to see him in parliament.
Hope none will harras him further.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:32 AM

    What difference ?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:58 AM

He was the man behind Sri Lanka and because of him All Sri Lankens felt that they had a back bone.
    Three Cheers to SF

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:33 AM

    Very right.
These people are just commenting without analysing.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:34 AM

    dear tutu,

mind your words and show some respect to our real presidetnd General Fonseka, tq

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:35 AM

according to her there should be trees now, where he trod..

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:37 AM

Those who write those glowing remarks about SF, remember.

Even Ranil and the UNP spoke of him like that. Now they have all forgotten him. It is more than likely that you have picked up the old words Ranil and his gang uttered before the Presidential elections, which they themselves have dropped now.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:10 AM

    Your ignorance is exhibited.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:40 AM

Nishantha, Are you just born or after a deep sleep...?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:11 AM

All the Best Sir. You are our only hope

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:37 AM

He did not throw away the green card. Who said that?? He already got a greencard and he wanted to be there physically to renew it. He did it and so he is a US Green Card Holder.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:38 AM

    What a mean spirited comment!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:16 AM

    Congratulations sir

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:46 AM

SF is a great military leader with no emotions, the one man pushed all three forces towards victory, but it will take sometime to become a gentle-man.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:18 AM

The Lion of Sri Lanka ! Congratulations !
Good Luck and give all those rouges a tough time.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:48 AM

MR seem ok compared to GR, must be fuming!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:40 AM

Threw away the green card??? That's a laugh!! Stop lying Mike!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:21 AM

congratulations general fonseka!!!! nice to see you back, our sinhala lion, jayawewa!!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:42 AM

Yes! May justice be served and Fonseka learn his lesson for betraying the army and selling his country!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:43 AM

Being a MP doesnt mean that he can avoid the past. He will still has to face the court marshal.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:37 AM

Jayawewa we are with you sir,You are the real hero of this country.people will realize the truth soon.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:56 AM

IT WOULD BE BETTER OTHERS SET EXAMPLES BY DISCLOSING THEM SELVES FIRST

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:58 AM

Yes the greatest for betraying all those who lend a hand. And controlling all media discrediting others and crediting himself on all the good work of others

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:45 AM

    who fonseka?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:38 AM

Hemantha, I totally agree with you.He is a professional soldier. Not a professional politician. He finished his part brilliantly. We salute for that.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:39 AM

Fonseka, 1st of all you should make a statement in the parliament and should reveal where Danuna is. Then Explain why Anoma lied about your health conditions. Then apologize for betraying the country for US Green Card.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:42 AM

What a great day today. Wish you good General SF

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:43 AM

Congradulations Sir. Make this country a better place. All illegal attempts to stop you will one day go away. No one could stop you.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 11:02 AM

Well well the real drama begins....

When contesting Presidential Election he said he will fight for the democracy, press freedom, bla... bla... Now he is saiyng that he will fight for the rights & privilege of the MP's... when time passes he only fight for HIS RIGHTS & PRIVILEGE only... wait and see

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:45 AM

Lal,I think many fools here would not understand what you have written.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:50 AM

    what a foolish talk

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 08:54 AM

There are many kids! what about namal, duminda, other ministers' sons, you will witness how parliament will become a rugby ground!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:58 AM

Dear President, You are the greatest. You showed it once again. I hope SF will understand the truth.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:04 AM

    we always salute you sir....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:03 AM

You talk as if you were there in person when Gota was questioned , did you see Sarath throwing away the green card?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:04 AM

They might expedite the court martial in order to permanently
keep him out.Best of luck General.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:05 AM

good news Sir. After two and half months heard some thing good for the my body and mind as well.Congratulation dear Sir. God bless.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:06 AM

You are quite right. If Sri Lankans are NOT ignorant, why is our country in such a bad situation? 60% certainly are fools.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:07 AM

    ''TRUE LEADER & A GENTLEMAN""

    MY FOOT

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:10 AM

A real Officer and a Gentleman. There is absolutely no need to thank the President for "allowing" the General to come to Parliament as some of those who commented foolishly. The law of the country is above everyone, unlike a pseudo court martial. Yes, it is very sad to see that 60% of the population in this country are foolish and fell prey to propaganda of the UPFA to re-elect them.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:12 AM

the patriot is back and aren't we glad..

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:13 AM

SF was a leader of a rare breed which MR can never dream of being part of. True MR is a clever politician and at that level a leader - So was Machiavelli. All great leaders started their national duties against all odds, with a lot of sacrifice. Against this backdrop, it is certainly a great day for Sri Lanka to wittness a leader like SF taking his long overdue place in terms of national duties.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 11:24 AM

Correction !!! not 60% of the population dear. only 34.40% of the total registered voters ( that means UPFA got support the support of around 35% of the population.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:11 AM

Good to see you in the parliment sir, politics and war are a different game, we know you will shine quickly and will do the best for our country as true politician...... We are with you sir.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:17 AM

How can one forget that he betrayed his own army for the sake of a few $$$ in his pocket . They say they are none so blind as those who refuse to see. What a pathetic situation . At least we can see he has no breathing difficulties as he attended parliamnet as claimed by his wife.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:12 AM

If LTTE comes again, then you will know who Fonseka is.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:15 AM

    Progress!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:17 AM

Jaya Wewa... He will make a difference.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:18 AM

None can claim innocent, these things are happening in a mega way in sri lanka, and is unfortunately become a tradition.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:18 AM

Its good to see the General back in action. now his voice will be heard.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:23 AM

Nice to hear this good news...

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:23 AM

    CONGRATULATIONS

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:23 AM

We were told by Anoma that SF couldnt speak and was having serious breathing problems and he was almost dying.Lets see who is lying now.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:24 AM

Congratulations keep up the good work

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:25 AM

MR showed he is a true leader and a gentleman by allowing SF to attend parliament, SF is no challenge to mighty Mahinda .History will put these people inn their due place Jayaweawa!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:18 AM

MR. FONSEKA IS THE BACKBONE OF THE WAR WON

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:26 AM

    Bravo!!!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:26 AM

We have run short of leaders with a solid back bone that will not bend at any cost! so one enters, be glad!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:30 AM

Slow and Steady wins the race. If there is a will there is a way. Wait and see! Jayawewa General!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:27 AM

I think you were also told that after Mrs. Fonseka and DNA made noises, they sent a doctor, did X-ray and prescribed some drugs.
And we pray that he is in good health.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:27 AM

lol , he can have parliament meals for a few years , that's all. nothing will be changed !!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:28 AM

We are going to lose Dr. Mervin Silva as he's resigning his post from the Parliament.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:32 AM

He'll be OK with AC & Super Meals !

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:32 AM

Do you want him to die?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:22 AM

Showed what ?This is supposed to be democratic country.Ninety eight thousand people chose the general as their representative.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:37 AM

Congrat sir! we are with you! May you get the blessings of the Holy Triple Gem!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:34 AM

General Fonseka and Arjuna are the only MPs who have life time achievements for the nation under their belt which the whole nation can be proud of . Rest are all criminals, except respected few.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:35 AM

Mr Asoka, Pleasesay something good at least. Don't always talk bad news.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:36 AM

Congratulations Sir. We believe in you. We know the truth will prevail.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:37 AM

SF Our sincere Blessings are with you. Jayawewa. Ours and Our childrens future is with you.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:38 AM

    congratulation s Sir !

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:38 AM

To Daily Mirror online Editor, if you can publish comments like Asoka Ranasinghe's, what is the problem you see with my ones? Please publish this.
Asoka Ranasinghe you are the greatest ponsi of all time. Read all the comments and see how many people have greeted the Great General Fonseka. Today we walk freely in the streets and celebrated the New Year peacefully because of this great man who almost sacrificed his life not once but thrice. So salute him.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:38 AM

If he is so mighty why is he so scared of SF ? Only ignorant fools believe your theory.Remove your rose coloured glasses and then see what is really happenning to our country.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:38 AM

Now Open Your Mouth & Command with Full Volume... to these Idiots ...Sir !

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:39 AM

Congratulations, General ! It seems , you are more popular in our country as well as overseas by now.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:40 AM

Guys, Don't dream he is only attending the first session of parliament only.

After 3 months DNA can appoint someone else to that MP post, that was their initial plan. Poor guys....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:41 AM

A real opposition leader came to the parliment..........good move....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 11:59 AM

Congratulation Sir at least after 3 months we have seen you, people of our country always forget things very fast, People will realize your value soon

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:42 AM

Time to get to work General... we have to clean up this mess

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:42 AM

We need an inspiring figure in parliament in these dwindling
times of economic/political gloom. Some one who could lift up our spirit. Not even a suicide bomb or prison/isolation
    could break him!!
    .Good luck!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:43 AM

Now it is your turn to show your colours as a politician and the way is clear to go up to the top seat. We are with you.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:44 AM

God, You will do the best thing.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:41 AM

thats the reality as we know how is the JVP

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:45 AM

Now, let's all work together to achieve a strong political solution in which all politicians respect each other and the people they represent.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:46 AM

Surani, Asoka is wearing dark blue coloured glasses not rose, that is why he sees everything in favour of Mahinda.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:46 AM

thanks JVP. You have given a gift to the country. 7 of you will be adequate to fight on corruptions. Thanks for DNA voters.
Do not worry about the reduction of your MP's. This is great

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:46 AM

But... Fonseka's backbone was bent by US $. Have you forgotten it or you don't want us to remember it. Be mindful and stop worshiping anyone.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:32 AM

CONGRADULATIONS! GENERAL SIR. Actually it was a shame for Sri Lanka that after a successful war, the War Hero was sent to jail. But this step at least shows that the democracy in Sri Lanka is not fully dead yet.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:47 AM

    Jayawewaaaaaa

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:47 AM

The Ex. General could join the government and sit in the front bench.

He is a singleton, no doubt but certainly not a simpleton.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:47 AM

    Agree100%.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:47 AM

Earlier Prabakaran feared you. Now MR........ How much they fear..... we can see.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:47 AM

Mr. Asoka, President is keen to let Silva's also play as per their whims and fancies.
General is a national hero. He did not bend down before politicians. He deserves respect. Just talk like a Sri Lankan. We are a nation with gratitude. Can you forget he was attacked by LTTE and at that time people had 'bodhi pooja' for him.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:46 AM

This is the Man who will lead our nation very soon....Even if this is bitter for a set idiots in this country. THIS IS THE TRUTH....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:56 AM

yes they are ignorant fools ...atleast 60%

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:54 AM

What has EU got to do with this.
critic, stop bending your back bone to european masters.

Sri lanka is government by srilankan voters and not by EU.
Majority srilankans have voted for Mahinda and SF is virtually rejected.
The very same people who enbraced SF as hero, have made him a traitor when he politically betryaed the country.
SF himself is reponsible for this pathatic situation.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:56 AM

Sorry, but if I am not mistaken you have just excepted the Europeans as masters. Ha.. funny dude.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:57 AM

    Congrats General.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:57 AM

Anatomically a backbone is not enough to win a war chandana

My heartiest congratulations to my guru and he will make the difference very soon.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:57 AM

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:57 AM

    Best news ever!!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:57 AM

Whether MR is true or false only time will tell. If he had blocked the General from attending Parliment he would have hell to pay with the EU

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:57 AM

A new page turned in Parliamentary history. among the rouges a brave
soldier who saved the country and who stands against
a dictator, shines bright, and we Srilankan hope he would be a rising sun for this miserable nation.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:59 AM

Congratulations Sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, we are very happy.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:05 AM

What has happened to his 4.1 mil vote base. If the general public accepted him as a hero, why have they not voted for him instead of UNP and PA ? Of course he was brilliant in war strategies but people have clearly decided that he can't rule the country.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:02 AM

Yes Suramya, I was there in the same flight where Gota was going to US with Wimal. I'm a US green card holder and I know what happend more than you.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:02 AM

It has certainly taken a very long time for us to understand!
It will take some more months of Sundays to feel the pinch in the boot.
