Colombo becomes Venice when it rains.

It is imperative that the drainage system for the outflow of water that falls on Colombo streets is improved from the now open waterways that are constantly blocked with debris, to a closed system. This unfortunately is also a source for mosquitoes to breed with its dire consequences.

Wait till the encroachments are demolished! Canals are cleared and the waterways are silted!!

This trend will get worse with time and is a result of Climate Change that the whole world is talking about. SL also has contributed to this by opening up forests legally and illegally but the worst culprits are Europe, US, UK and other so called developed nations. Even now they have not taken significant steps to cut down their C emissions. What happended at the Copenhagen Summit is a good example. It is time that SL through SAARC, NAM, etc exert presssure on these nations and UN to take corrective measures to reverse environmental degredation instead of harping on trivial human rights issues. The new Environment Minister and the Government should take this seriously and also stop illegal forest felling at home.
