The dangers facing the people of this country were made even more evident by the death threats received by Minister Maithripala Sirisena, UNP MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told a news conference today.

“Mr. Sirisena is not an ordinary person. He is the Chief Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). He is one of the few well disciplined and admirable politicians in the party and also the country,” he said.

He said the Government was planning a different strategy this time and eliminating senior members of the SLFP to replace corrupt politicians who had crossed over. “If he and his family are receiving death threats it is not hard to imagine the plight of an ordinary citizen in this country. If someone has been sending death threats to the Chief Secretary, it can only be someone who is in a higher position than himself,” Mr. Kariyawasam said.

He also accused the government of a lack of will power. He said that the Government had only given priority to Hambantota without thinking of the practical use of some of the projects coming up there.

“The Hambantota Harbour is still to prove its worth and the Mattala International Airport is not going to profitable. The Ranminnithenna Tele Cinema Village is only a white elephant. Even an actor can’t keep make up for more than two minutes in the hot climate there. But still they are filming in the village as certain media are requesting them to do so,” Mr. Kariyawasam said.

If projects such as the Api Wavamu-Rata Nagamu project were successful, he said the vegetable prices should not have increased. “Too many taxes being imposed on imported products to protect local industries have also ended in failure. Consumers can’t purchase these items as these imported products are too expensive,” he said.

Mr. Kariyawasam said that the Government should reduce the cost of living and feed the people rather than appoint more committees. (Yohan Perera and Lahiru Pothmulla)

No! It's going from terrible to impossible now!

    Ranjit Friday, 01 March 2013 06:07 AM

Are these death threats state sponsered? May be to prevent IO Sirisena becoming PM. State sponsered or not it is a good threat.

    Nodrog Friday, 01 March 2013 05:58 AM

If at all the threats are real then it could only be because they've stepped on a lot of toes in their quest to fill their pockets and not due to terrorism. The honest ordinary citizen faces no such threats.

It is only Ranil and his stooges believe what the government says, We all know that this minister was making these statements to shield his son. Now the UNP (The Ranil gang) is extending support.

Publik Abilik Friday, 01 March 2013 12:02 AM

The ordinary person on the street is hassled, harried and sometimes falsely accused. So pardon me if I don't shed a tear to the fabricated 'death threat' to the corrupt politicians. kimbul kandulu had all dried up.

    IVJ Thursday, 28 February 2013 10:46 PM

The problem is, these politicians think they become an “extra ordinary” citizen once they get elected. Why don’t these politicians kill each other so that at least by that way the country will get cleansed!

    SW Thursday, 28 February 2013 10:17 PM

Politicians have made the general public to be so cynical of their actions , nobody believes them anymore.

    rumi Thursday, 28 February 2013 07:47 PM

well said- i salute you- but only one doubt- will you maintain the same policy if UNP come to power?

    Samantha Thursday, 28 February 2013 07:23 PM

True, but whats the point. Up to now has the government ever listend to our grievances...
