A A A

A resolution in the Eastern Provincial Council calling for the full implementation of the 13th amendment was passed a short while ago.

SLMC Group Leader Mohamed Jameel proposed the resolution asking for the meaningful implementation of the 13th Amendment which provided for the establishment of provincial councils in Sri Lanka.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which is the main opposition in the EPC supported this resolution with the SLMC and the United National Party (UNP). Government member Wimalaweera Dissanayake raised his hand in support of the resolution.

There were 16 votes in favour of the resolution with one vote against. The six members of the two ruling party allies -- All Ceylon People’s Congress and National Congress- were not present at the time of voting.  However, Chief Minister Najeeb Abdul Majeed opposed the resolution.(KB)

Suq Madique Wednesday, 02 October 2013 12:43 PM

raj, don't talk rubbish. Sinhalese don't oppress the tamils. Its tamils demanding the impossible more and more every day and blaming the majority Sinhalese for all their woes.

    Raj Wednesday, 02 October 2013 09:21 AM

one wants to oppress the other and the other want to liberate itself from the other.

    Raj Wednesday, 02 October 2013 09:19 AM

Where will Udaya Gammanpila go if the Provincial Councils (13th Amendment) are abolished?

    Raj Wednesday, 02 October 2013 09:17 AM

eliminate one monster and create another, won't solve the issue.

    Cruso Wednesday, 02 October 2013 08:40 AM

We will get rid of the PC and give autonomous power only to the northeast . Then the problem will be solved , if we are opposing the PC system. Well done .

    thayan Wednesday, 02 October 2013 07:52 AM

yes sir yes sir , you talking about freedom? what is the meaning of freedom ? do you think that you have freedom in SL now?

    rakavan Wednesday, 02 October 2013 07:15 AM

13A was introduced to secure and protect the political rights of Tamil speaking people of NE, so why should there be a 'nationwide' referendum. I do not see the logic here.

kamal Silva Wednesday, 02 October 2013 07:14 AM

Exactly. Better close down all the police stations country wide and handle all the works from the police headquarters in Colombo.

    M.Aroosh Wednesday, 02 October 2013 06:16 AM

its a very good move well done

    nalaka Tuesday, 01 October 2013 11:12 AM

    that wont be needed

    esther Wednesday, 02 October 2013 04:10 AM

Hold a countrywide referendum to see whether Sri Lanka needs provincial councils where tax payers money is wasted for no reasons

    ind Wednesday, 02 October 2013 04:00 AM

Exactly. Should eliminate Provincial councils and Urban/Pradeshiya shabas and establish district saba instead.

    Shylock Wednesday, 02 October 2013 03:09 AM

The LTTE were terrorists with no regard to any constitution! What is asked for is the implementation of a supposedly valid democratic constitution! There is no question of 'asking for the moon'!

    Nims Tuesday, 01 October 2013 10:36 PM

You guys did not agree to PC's when your cousins - the so called LTTE was terrorising the country. Why you want it now????? Do you want to achieve your targets by hook or by crook

    rakavan Tuesday, 01 October 2013 07:40 PM

This clearly shows that the political aspirations of Tamils and Sinhalese are diametrically opposite.

    CHANDRA Tuesday, 01 October 2013 07:12 PM

GOOD MOVE, EXCELLENT, NEXT MOVE SHOULD BE THE MERGER OF THE TORN NORTH AND EASTERN PROVINCE.MUSLIM BROTHERS THAT IS THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR THE TAMIL SPEAKING PEOPLE TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY AND SELF RESPECT.

    Hasan Tuesday, 01 October 2013 06:41 PM

Well done brave guys..this is how we can protect minority rights in SL, those majority people keep quite as you are the majority. We minorities are under threat from all groups so we want this, this is our Provincial Council where we have majority and we have the right to do everything..

    kumaraya Tuesday, 01 October 2013 05:05 PM

Let us have a referendum throughout the nation and ask if the 13th should be instituted or revoked.

dickie bird Tuesday, 01 October 2013 05:03 PM

GOSL must do away and get rid of the Provincial councils once and for all.
There are too many political tiers in the country and money is spent unnecessarily to upkeep those elected and for the logistics that go with it.

    Out.............. Provincial Councils............

    Neloufer Tuesday, 01 October 2013 03:57 PM

If not for the govt you won't be talking of elections or voting or the ability to ask and get anything. Did you have this freedom when the LTTE were riding horsey in the Eastern and Northern provinces? Yes - ask for the moon if you can.

    dilhan Tuesday, 01 October 2013 02:58 PM

any one should understand that giving police powers to the provincial councils is not practical because sri lanka is a small country. one police is more than enough as far I think

    Labby Tuesday, 01 October 2013 11:30 AM

    Here we go

    Sivapriyan.A Tuesday, 01 October 2013 11:17 AM

Excellent Move ...... No one breaching the costituion other than goverment.
