Eleven buffaloes were killed on the spot this morning when they were knocked down by a speeding container truck at the Dematapitiya junction in Bangadeniya, the Chillaw police said.
The said two other buffalos were severely injured with their legs broken.
The herd of buffalos from the Rajakadaluwa Palugaswewa Estate in Chillaw had for some reason stampeded on to the road.
The estate management said the buffalo carcasses were removed with the help of backhoes.
The Chillaw Cultivation Company and the Police are conducting separate investigations. (Augustine Fernando)

Thank you for that insightful information.. :P How fast do you think you need to be going for that to happen? and how fast do you think the speed limits on Sri Lankan roads are? Don't be stupid, you've been watching too many movies.. But I do admit the first person to be prosecuted if need be should be the owners of the animals.. just cos we've always had animals on the road, don't make it right..

# Andrew Tuesday, 24 April 2012 06:29 PM
This has become a common news now. Whats wrong with these drivers? Buffalo were thee on roads from the very old days. Are they purposely killing??? I guess they do. Sad. Poor animals..
ranjith premakumara Tuesday, 24 April 2012 06:36 PM
You people never drive a container truck. If the buffalos stampeted suddenly across the road driver cant brake. If he brakes container may be overturned because of its weight. And the whole contains also damege. Please before commenting think twice.
