Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake today requested journalists and media institutions to be careful when using the media freedom that prevails under the new government.

He said journalists should verify their facts and figures by speaking to the sources without writing news stories just to fulfill certain agendas.

“Attacking us through the media is fine but they should not be used to harm the economy of the country. Recently, there were several misleading articles published by media against the finance ministry,” he said.

The minister made these comments at a news conference held at the ministry during a programme launched by the Finance Ministry in collaboration with the Mass Media and the Information Ministry to provide motorbikes and houses to journalists at a reasonable price.

The minister said they were doing their best to maintain transparency and accountability when carrying out duties. He said it would not need much to destroy good work achieved through hard work. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Media has too much freedom under MS govt. Hate speech and racially provocative reporting should be banned and culprits punished.

Yeah, when you are at the receiving end it is abuse of media. When you were in the opposition, it was media freedom being denied.

These crooked morons came to power promising media freedom. When the media expose their lies, crooked deals done by him and the others in government, it is abusing media freedom.

Media has the right to express the opinion, but it should not go too far in ridiculing the religion or race. MR used the media nowadays to abuse the Northern Province people.

If there are erroneous articles written, you should be taking legal action against the publisher and author. Not by putting restrictions on the media!

If you do right, then you should not entertain any fear of media.
