A female attached to an Embassy in Colombo has made a complaint with the Kollupitiya police alleging that she was sexually harassed by a doctor of a private hospital while pretending to carry out a medical examination for an ailment in her hand.

The complainant told police that she went to a private hospital in Kollupitiya on December 2 in order to receive treatment for the pain. The victim complained that she was taken into an examination room and sexually harassed by touching her in an inappropriate manner. The victim further told police that she became uncomfortable because she could not understand why he was examining her in such a way. The complainant further alleged that there was no female nurse in the examination room while she was being examined by the doctor. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

If it was a foreign country, the license of the doctor and the hospital would have been cancelled immediately, but this is Sri Lanka.

These private hospitals and private medical consultants rip off the general public, there's no standard in terms of the charging levels in the healthcare industry of Sri Lanka..These need to be taken up in courts and necessary action has to be taken...

Wonder why it took her more than 10 days to lodge a complaint? May be she was waiting for legal eagles from the USA...... Women in USA come up with the Sexual Harassment card for the flimsiest of situations...

IF a woman picks up the phone and calls the cops for sexual harassment by any MALE including the husband, they come and arrest the male. IF a male calls the woman is NOT arrested... why? This is a reason for single moms and broken families.... I know of a mother who has 4 children by 4 fathers. She lives on child support and govt benefits...This is the scenario in the WEST.... SAD..........

Had this employee been in the USA and filed the plaint, she n her lawyers are looking at mega $$$$$$....

Why is the place of employment relevant to this report ? Where she works cant qualify or disqualify her experience. is this an attempt to sensationalize ?

Private hospitals and clinics should ensure the consultants they hire should be through with the medical ethics taught to them in the Medical Faculty. No female patient should be examined without the presence of a female nurse. Bio-medical practitioners have no right to examine a female patient without informing her that they are going to examine only that part of the body for the given reason. This doctor is a danger to the society. the respective hospital should remove him from visiting the hospital and bring the matter to the Disciplinary Committee of SLMC. he is an embarrassment to the noble profession.

if both party agree on this matter what do we call that ?

this incident may be true may be not true. but the sexual harassment laws favor the women. i am not saying women should not be protected but these laws can be easily used against men even for a small disagreement say like a doctor overcharging. police should investigate thoroughly before filing charges against men.

She's an employee of US embassy. So could this be an international conspiracy to tarnish the image of SL government ?

    jterm Tuesday, 13 December 2011 04:00 PM

Disgusting! If this is true, this doctor should be given some very special medicine!

    len Wednesday, 14 December 2011 03:15 AM

Now before every one gets excited remember she works for US embassy. Remember SL government consistently point to dirty tricks by the West.

allegations toward the doctor may not true because this doctor is a high profile good Doctor, he doesn't need to assault this US Embassy the particular employee! people have to beware the allegations made by Embassies and its local employees!!

Most astonishing ! the young woman of today are in a bad way due to a few frustrated elderly males,

Punishment meted out during the Sinhala kings days should be introduced and offending parts chopped off.

    Lankan Wednesday, 14 December 2011 02:39 AM

if is true he should be disciplined and be under supervision
    like in other countries

    Dass Wednesday, 14 December 2011 02:13 AM

There SHOULD be a female nurse present whenever a octor examines a female patient. Then only female patients can be safe. Doctors can be safe too if they follow this procedure.

I am in a so called advance country the protocol of having a female nurse while being physically examined by a medical professional does not exist here and that was a cultural shock to me when I migrated . So it seems that Sri Lanka is fast adapting some of the practices of cost cutting ! It is best to safeguard both parties that an attendant nurse should be present at a medical examination .

Herby Padmaperuma. Tuesday, 13 December 2011 08:11 PM

What a trivial matter to get this much of publicity. A doctor cannot exam without a physical permissible touch. Is this the first visit of this "touch me not" patient, or could there be some intrinsic reason/s yet unrevealed. Doctors, be ware, embassy employees are immune.

    banda Tuesday, 13 December 2011 08:08 PM

Many Doctors in Sri Lanka tell good looking girls and women to take off their tops to inspect simple fever etc. Doctors are not respectable anymore. In fact one famous Gyno inspects each one of his patients for breast cancer and even has a poster about breast cancer in the waiting room to support it.

    R M Somaratne Tuesday, 13 December 2011 07:59 PM

Doctors in Sri Lanka do not know much about work ethics. None of the medical schools in Sri Lanka do teach them as well. In western countries patients expect due respect.

Some of the post graduate trainees come from Sri Lanka have to leave Australia and UK due to the fact that their examination techniques were considered as sexually inappropriate.
