DIG slaps SSP

Police sources informed that on Sunday when the T 20 world cup match ended at the R. Premadasa Stadium a DIG had slapped a SSP and an attempt was now being made to hush it.

The victim SSP had immediately brought this matter to the notice of two DIGs who had been present at the scene. Both DIG and SSP involved in this incident had been deployed on security duties for this match.

This incident had sparked off when the DIG had attempted to take into the stadium a group of his friends and the SSP had confronted him saying “Sir don’t do this.” This had angered the DIG who had retorted, “Who are you to give instructions to a DIG like me” and slapped him on the face. This scene had been witnessed by many of the thousands of cricket fans and other police personnel who were present at the venue. The SSP had been greatly humiliated by this act of a superior. Police sources revealed that attempts were made to cover up the incident.

However many senior police officers were requesting the authorities to conduct a proper inquiry.(Srinath Prasanna Jayasuriya)

    Sumithi Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:07 AM

SSP would say now> " I cant recall such an incodent"

For this same match a man was arrested for selling a ticket for a high price. So did the DIG took his friends in? If he did....

    Naah nothing would happen..

Calistus Jayatilleke Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:07 AM

Nothing unusual in this country. The seniors obviously follow their political masters and do whatever they want for personal benefit and the juniors are expected to shut up and put up just like the public are doing when politicians cross their limits. This is the only way one can aspire to become the Miracle of Asia!

    Nina H Kamal Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:17 AM

Slap or no SLAP - We await to see what actions/reactions to this will lead to.... could this be another 'sweep under the carpet' issue with a transfer?

    KP Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:18 AM

make sure if the SSP was on DUTY. Otherwise DIG or his son can beat him. That's the LAW of this country. Malaka'sstyle! this reminds me sometime back a rugby player was slapped by a VIP son. The player later said'Sir dint hit me'. what a country!!

    des Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:12 AM

Who ever the DIG is his uniform should be removed in public by the this SSP, these people does not deserve to implement law of the country.

    Pathiya Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:31 AM

The government should stop trying to cover up offensive acts, which are coming to light on a daily basis, by sweeping the dirt under the carpet. If this goes on, the whole thing could blow up in the faces of all Sri Lankans.

    KD Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:26 AM

humiliated ? That's a brave Police man. Well done SSP you're my hero! If only more people stood up for what is right, our country with an infinite amount of skills would be a world leader. It's the corruption specially in the most powerful of us who drag the whole country down. Please Mr. President! promote this SSP to a DIG and demote the DIG to a gambatta! better yet, a police dog!

    jan Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:26 AM

    Did he slap himself?

    sirisena Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:33 AM

    A DIG implements Jungle law

    kaputakukula Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:33 AM

It's cool. The "NUMBER ONE" taught us hold an inquiry and find the victim at fault and punish him (ref: case xxx Malaka vs major). By the way will the POLICE would protest? I don't think so due to the fact that the police do not have a spine to stand up!

    madhu Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:29 AM

Dismiss this indiscipline DIG. shame to the police.

Political Illiterate Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:30 AM

The DIG realised that he had 1 more STAR than he could manage and try to give it to the SSP - i mean the STAR - and the SSP saw 'STARS"! He (DIG) was doing a favour/charitable donation of a STAR (THARU)

    Pxx Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:34 AM

Must need to have a proper inquiry and sentence this DIG to sing his own songs.

    Beast-act By DIG Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:34 AM

This is very beast behavior or DIP. Overpower and showing his highness. Like our Mervin and Malaka, Duminda. If Police DIG also do this, whats the use..more over among the people. I think DIG is not a polite enough, If DIG really want to slap SSP, he would have called him personally and should have done whatever he wants. This is a real beast behavior by DIG. So finally SRi Lanka DIG police also shown a good exmaple of conduct to public. Jayawaywa..Suba chintanaya selection of DIP by MR, Well done

    waz Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:45 AM

The DIG may have a BIG political 'hand'?

    kuriosity Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:49 AM

if found guilty the DIG should be sacked and all benifits taken away. The SSP has ben humilated in front of the general public and other police personel. This type of acts should NOT be tolarated.

However the SSP may have slapped himslef or teh DIG may not remember what happened!

Citizen Perera Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:57 AM

If a police officer behave like a thug, this country is in a pathetic situation.

Yohan Perera Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:58 AM

Good comments. We overlooked something however. Not all the officers in the police department are sold out or have lost their backbones.

I salute the victim SSP for his bravery and pray that justice shall prevail.

    prasad Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:03 AM

    NO !!
Actually the SSP will have to be sacked like the Army Major. Story will come out to say that SSP was providing security to businessman in the stadium during the match duty.. !~@#**

Innocent DIG has done nothing... some other unidentified person has slapped !!

Woner of Army and Police !!! this is wonder land !!!!

    Slcity Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:07 AM

In few days ssp wil forget what happened so please take immediate action against Dig

    LankanFellow1com Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:08 AM

If this DIG can do this to a person in uniform, it scary to think of a general public's position. This should be dealt properly to teach everyone a lesson.. Otherwise we are are scared to live in this land..

    Siripala Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:14 AM

As usual in this lawless republic, ultimately the SSP has to admit that he slapped himself..

    Kautilya Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:20 AM

To solve the problem IGP should slap DIG in front of SSP

    Fazli Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:21 AM

OK, If and when a trial is called, can the SSP stand it ? Or will he, like in many past cases, say " slapped ? Oh no I was not there ? I was home watching T20 finals. Funny Land No wonder !

    Shocking Wednesday, 10 October 2012 06:21 AM

How can people respect the police when they conduct themseves like cheap thugs against their own officers. The poor SSP was doing his duty expected of him to deny entry of all sorts of catchers, of swollen headed superiors to break the law... I hope the IGP if he has any decency will throw the book at this DIG and sack this slap happy thug.Hope the poor SSP did not slap himself or asked for a slap.. The DIG should be fired immediately. Its conduct unbecoming an high ranking officer. Its a disgrace to the S/L Police Force to have a DIG who cannot control his emotions and uses physical force against another officer. FIRE HIM IMMEDIATELY IF HE DID WHAT IS ALLEGED IN THIS NEWS ITEM.

Calistus' s comments give a very clear picture of whats going on in the country. If the authorities read them and treat them as constructive and try to correct themselves the country might come out of this current abismal situation.

What a jungle law...this shameful incident is a clear demonstration of the decayed moral standard of this country. Rulers from the top to bottom are worst than mad dogs.

    C. Seneveratne Wednesday, 10 October 2012 07:11 AM

This is a very serious offense by a DIG . Why don't the IGP hold a inquiry
and punish the DIG in question? Sweeping under the carpet is a way of life
    in Sri Lanka.

    Merv Wednesday, 10 October 2012 07:06 AM

DIG had slapped the SSP because he was in the stadium. He was in the stadium because he had been deployed on security duty for the match . If he was not deployed for this duty the innocent DIG would not have slapped this SSP. The officer who detailed this SSP for security duty should be dismissed.
    Jusatin Keppetiyagama

Rick Breeze Wednesday, 10 October 2012 07:22 AM

SSP will retract story by saying " I was in shock because of the crowd. I realized the DIG had tickets later". Then SSP will be sacked for falsely accusing the DIG.

The DIG is innocent. It was the SSP who asked to him to be slapped by the DIG.
Also, that the SSP was providing security to his friends.
    WONDER OF ASIA???????????

    MirakRajBanda Wednesday, 10 October 2012 07:35 AM

Nothing strange!!! In this part of the world ''Hierarchy'' mean you are entitle and free to do anything you think appropriate. There is neither governing body nor does a watchdog independently monitor the action of the people in power from security guards to the President. Misconducts of those in power appear in tabloids, media, inquiry, name and shame, resignation or sacking will follow in an open, transparent society. Nothing known or heard in Sri Lanka but we still call that we are living in full democracy.
A senior DIG was assaulted in front of the TV crews over the phone by his superior recently seen by the millions and no action was taken so far. Of course, you CAN’T take any action either!!!
Worse are the cases of assault and abuse of the female officers.

If you need a change, teach your children at least.......

Ram Perera Wednesday, 10 October 2012 07:36 AM

Anichchawatha Sankara, What a sad situation. Unless the offender is punished we will see more of this in the future. SSP Please do not settle this for money or an apology. We have seen lots of it before the Supreme Court in the FR cases. The Police offenders go scott free.

The time is nigh when the people will be forced to take the law into their own hands. It is obvious now that from top down, the people in charge of taking care of citizens of this country are corrupt and beyond redemption. If a cop was assaulted like this by a fellow cop in any other country, it would have been an internal affairs nightmare, with the assaulting cop dismissed with cause.

    DHA Wednesday, 10 October 2012 08:18 AM

daily roberts Wednesday, 10 October 2012 08:28 AM

Regardless of who was in-charge at the time, when superior officer should be respected if there is no respect for superior officer, there is no law in the Cadre, DIG had done nothing wrong, he just brought some friends for the match for fun may be his family, that's his privilege because he has been working years and years for Police department and serving the country and becoming a DIG, he should have some sort of Authority. And there is no involvement of illegal activity. Slap is a good lesson for the SSP,

You are a bloody idiot for making such a stupid remark. There is absolutely no reason to slap a fellow officer be it in public or otherwise.

This is the caliber of DIG's we have now in the Police. Its a joke. Anyway this SSP should be promoted for standing his ground.
Its a shame that this DIG has no respect for the law.
Mung wage ung thamai rata kanne !! Hiwallu !

    Chakablass Friday, 12 October 2012 08:35 AM

IG should get the SSP slap back at DIG by calling in for a public assembly

    VEDDAH Tuesday, 26 February 2013 03:49 AM

IF THIS IS HOW DIG AND SSP CONDUCT THEMSELVES,
YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW ROTTEN THE POLICE FORCE IS.
BEFORE THE SINHALESE CAME TO THIS COUNTRY, WE
DID NOT NEED A POLICE FORCE
ABOUT TIME WE TOOK OVER THE COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
