A family in Kandy has posted an obituary notice for their pet dog which was killed as a result of a brawl between two groups. The death notice says the pet dog named ‘Teddy’ was beaten on the head using a pole and dumped into a well.

While expressing sadness over the death, the family which brought up the dog cursed those involved in murdering the animal as well as their parents and children.

The funeral of the dog took place at the family burial grounds after performing the religious rites. (Daily Mirror online)

    no religion.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:10 AM

Are you a vegetarian Sam? One dog killed in Sri Lanka and you have declared war on Buddhists not even knowing whether the killer is a Buddhist. Most of us, irrespective of our religion directly or indirectly kill thousands of animals daily for our consumption, population control etc. isn’t it? curse may be upon you too!!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:25 AM

RIP: Is it a Collie or a Pomeranian?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:25 AM

What they do to innocent creatures.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:27 AM

Hey spark , How do you know this dog was killed by a Buddhist ??, dont be a fool.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:31 AM

The dog, they say, is man's best friend. There are legions of stories relating how dogs had been loyal to their masters. But, when human beings have forgotten what compassion is in this so called "dharmishta" land, they become worse than dogs. A curse could be the least of the punishment for such mad dogs.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:34 AM

    True Buddhists never curse.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:41 AM

Still our people in 18th Century.... What to do ?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:45 AM

There should be some valid reason for one to kill a dog. One should not run into hasty conclusions and it is absolutely necessary to gather some information from the vicinity before making statements. I know of a dog in one of the lanes close to where I live and the funniest thing with this dog is whenever a motor cycle passes his way this fellow growls and jumps at it and I have seen the riders cursing the dog. What have you got to say about this? Punishment to the dog or the dog owner!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:54 AM

The correct answer is in your heart

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:57 AM

That this dog could suffer so much, and die a painful death.....is just too terrible!Dog life should be deemed as important as human life!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:00 AM

WHY CURSE TO CRIMINALS CHILDREN?.BY THE WAY FAMILY DOGS SHOULD BE KEPT IN FAMILY PREMISESS,NOT ON ROADS.THEY ARE ANIMALS AND UNPREDICTABLE AGAINST HUMANS.TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOGS BITES ANNUALY TAKING PLACE AND NEVER HEARD OWNERS PAY ANY COMPANSATION FOR VICTIMS FOR MEDICAL AND LOSS OF THEIR WORKING INCOME.USUALLY DOGS ARE USING ROADS AND PAYMENTS AS TOILETS,ALSO REAL DANGER FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS FOR THEIR SAFETY.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:00 AM

Forgiveness ? If they did this to your dog or anybody in your circle you won't say the same thing. Forgiveness never work here. Then we should have forgiven Praba also and forgot 1000's of Sinahalese, Muslims, Burgers and Malays he killed. I know there are some who say that we should have done that.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:22 AM

These days sri lankans doesn't need a reason to kill even another human, it is so disgisting the way things happening, my symapthy to Teddy.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:30 AM

Thank God animals do not have human weaknesses.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:31 AM

I know this area. All are Buddists. Me too. Its a shame for all

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:06 AM

I am sure nobody will kill innocent animal unreasonably. The Angor… where does this come from and why. Must find the reason for this. Otherwise, sympathy should not go for one party. This is our habit and is in our blood. Sympathy goes to victim.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:40 AM

really sorry about the poor dog, sometimes back however my family faced the same experience (of course we did not print any posters), one of my pet dog was innocently killed by a neighborer and also he threaten that he will kill us all afterward (but we did not react to him since his normal behavior is like that). Anyway, after some time he got killed alone with his crew(he was a naval soldier) in the northern sea after fighting for hours with Sea Tigers (LTTE) and the whole naval unit with him died like heroes by crashing onto an enemy boat with bombs. So he did a great sacrificed for his country and was a cruel man from another perspective..how to judge him I still can't figure out.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:43 AM

You know citizen, we human consist of mind, spirit and soul. Animals only mind and spirit. If you want to know more, come to my tution class.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:44 AM

    nice one

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:48 AM

sorry Animals only mind and soul!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 10:54 AM

where did i declare war on buddhism? get your facts right. what i am saying is that in this country, which is predominantly buddhist, acts of such gruesome nature are being carried on without any repercussions evident. i am a buddhist myself, so why on earth would i want to declare war on buddhism????? what is this vegetarianism that ur going on about? u think the dog was killed to serve a meal? may your gods have mercy on your soul for not condemning an act of such cruelty against a helpless animal!!!!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:07 AM

Technically it's Ur religion- Most of the dog's

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:10 AM

Let's give the story a positive angle. A dog (a darling to the members of some family) gave its life in its attempt to teach the people of one villege/township the values of humanity. I hope that the people will learn some good lesson from the sad event. Let the dog be the master of man.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress is reflected by the way its animals are treated - Mahatma Gandhi

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:17 AM

True, once our next door neighbor too had done that! It's heart breaking!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:24 AM

I do not know the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. However, SL does have laws to deal with cruelty to animals (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act). If the family concerned is aware of the perpetrators of this inhuman act, they would be well advised to lodge a complaint with the authorities...!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:25 AM

how can animals have rights when humans too don't have any.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:26 AM

Don't worry the fellows will get what they deserve. Remember the security guard who died caught-up in a factory fire, he used to throw dogs into the fire, so these fellows will get their heads smashed by some one or meet with a brutal accident :-). What goes around comes around. Animals are more civilised than many people!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 11:28 AM

there "were" true buddhists in sri lanka. Not any more anura.

    Monday, 24 May 2010 04:41 AM

we need to introduce laws like in the west against cruelty to animals.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:43 AM

    hmm.....

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:55 AM

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:57 AM

Teddy must have been like part of the family. How could they do this to a poor, innocent animal?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:59 AM

Curses definitely have effect, according to scriptures, and it is evident in many suffering people's lives in some way or the other.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:59 AM

    Dog killed by beasts??

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:01 AM

From morning till evening, Sri Lankans listens to bana. But lack of humanity in their hearts.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:05 AM

An they call themselves so called buddhists.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:05 AM

I saw the dog advertisement. I felt sorry for that dog. those who have power they will do anything they want. But those beasts forgot that God is watching all the murders etc....

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:08 AM

Cursing innocent children and parents is no better than what they have done to this innocent dog. To me there is no difference between the person who killed the dog and the one who came up with this idea.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:12 AM

This family is greatful to TEDDY. The other party has no right to kill a dog owned by another. This dog may have done his duty. So why should others kill the dog. Dog will not be favoring any one. Those people have no brain to think. They would have thought it as a human and murdered it.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:14 AM

Certainly Anju, the greatest act is 'forgiveness'. If possible!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:24 AM

INNOCENT DOG KIILED BY INHUMAN UNGRATEFULL "DOGS"

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:25 AM

poor fellow...!!!...victim of dumb brainless people...!!!....Our people will never learn our lessons...!!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:29 AM

Very true...!!!...Religion is just a fake cover our people are wearing they behave like angels inside worship places....and once they are out they put the devil out....!!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:35 AM

If this happened in USA or Canada, this scum who killed this innocent dog would be sent to jail under Cruelty to Animals Act.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:38 AM

it is sad to hear the news. But cursing children and parents mearly because of a dog is not acceptable. Is the soul of dog valuble than several human beings?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:53 AM

I don't know what to say.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:51 AM

When thousands of people keep reading this message saying the people who killed should be cursed, definitely that will happen since everybody reads the same way.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:52 AM

why a dog.......those who killed it have lesser knowledge than the animal.......the animal may not have a soul.......but they who owns them have.........

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:53 AM

This is 'cos people tend to love animals more than human being.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:00 AM

That's so true. Poor animals have no rights in our country and mistreated on a daily basis. May Teddy RIP.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:03 AM

What's the religion of the Dog?!.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:24 AM

i wish to god that what they have prayed for at the end of the obitury comes true and those barbaric animals who killed teddy get their due return. this is a pathetic situation in a country that proclaims to the world that it is the righful "owner" of buddhism!!!!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:25 AM

It is poetic justice if the curses work! Every act has its consequences, esp acts of cruelty to those without power, including animals

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:26 AM

oh who cares what their souls are worth, when they the so called humans do such inhumane acts!!!!!! i commend these ppl for the curse and i hope it gets doubled. we can do without two legged anumlas like that in this country!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:37 AM

There is no provisions in our Law to punish these Human Animals. But they deresve the curse. Shame for all human beings.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:43 AM

Correct Anju. Cursing is not a solution, no point blaming their children and parents. Best thing is to Forgive and then WAIT and SEE

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:51 AM

such things happens in this country/society due to no laws enfroced. There are laws and ones that protects animal rights as well, but even human laws are not enforced, so what we could expect?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:57 AM

in Kelaniya there is a road called D.B. Jayathilake Mawatha, it goes through a mash land and at least once a month there is a litter of puppies left by the roadside and by evening they r gone, but there a several "Kabayagoya"s in the mash land, guess where the pups end up... when i see the empty boxes in the evening only one phrase goes through my mind it starts like "this is the land of the..."

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:58 AM

...Poor thing! Just one more example of how we lack any sort of compassion or kindness. It's a pity that we happen to be called the most intelligent beings on the planet... And as for 'God'... I think God left Sri Lanka A long time ago!!!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:05 AM

    my deepest sympathy.
