Elections Chief Dayananda Dissanayaka will hold a meeting with political party secretaries on Friday to discuss election related issues and the possibility of having foreign counting agents at the centers, an official at the Elections Department told Daily Mirror online.

Additional Commissioner of Elections, P.M. Siriwardena said that Mr. Dissanayaka will discuss various issues including election violence raised by the political parties and if the UNP discusses the subject of foreign counters, then that too will be discussed with other political parties. “If the matter is raised we will the discuss it,” Mr. Siriwardena said.

The UNP said on Tuesday that they would request the Elections Commissioner to deploy foreign election monitors to the counting centres at the upcoming general election.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told journalists that his party was concerned about possible election malpractices at the upcoming polls, and therefore the presence of foreign monitors would be important.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:25 AM

Hope Hope EC will not have another Singapore ride after the Elections to check his bank accounts

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:26 AM

Why only state media? why not private media? he has to controll all state and private media.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:42 AM

There was not real election was held for the last 65 years.
and will be the same situation in Sri Lanka another 130 years

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 09:18 AM

Very good then the opposition will not pose disagreement with the results once UPFA wins the election in a big margin .

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:52 AM

    Good acting

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 04:00 PM

What action are you going to take if there is a tea-brake during counting?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 04:11 PM

Can Sri Lankans trust you anymore?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:16 PM

Difficult to believe Dayananda's stories. It's one story, on one day, and another, on the next day. Then the denial of the first story and alterations to the second story. This is repeated, over again. Oh, well!

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:34 PM

The foreign election monitors should be used as 'guardian angels' to monitor suspicious 'movements,' when the counting begins.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:53 PM

No Action - Talk Only ... people don't have faith in you, anymore ...

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 06:50 PM

Why don't we consider handing-over the whole election process to a foreign agent, if we don't have the capacity to hold a just one?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:35 PM

    'Weda barinam ain wenta' ...

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:10 AM

    this discussion is pointless.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:07 AM

Will that increase his "stress" level?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:16 AM

Will it be a repeat performance of yours at the Presidential Election with a recorded statement without contestants attending the announcements.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:22 AM

Funny move? This is because the ruling party is 100% sure of the victory after putting SF in a cell.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:28 AM

You are like a Soldier without the Gun !.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:35 AM

    nothing doing.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:38 AM

No use of Foreign monitors, we already know the results and also our election commissioner will be the life long Commissioner.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:44 AM

DEAF & BLIND. That's safe for you EC

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:46 AM

What about foreign monitors at the point of relaying the results? Let's see if the government views this too as 'interference'.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:04 AM

yes counting centres to be monitored by by foreign counting agents.what happened at the last president election.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:04 AM

What talks. We cannot trust the EC any more.If he cannot control the state media what is the use.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:15 AM

If the subjects taken up in the meeting can be implemented by the Elections Commissioner, it's fine. If not, waste of time and tax payer's money.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:18 AM

At the rate we are holding elections foreign countries may have to appoint permanent election monitors here.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:22 AM

You have lost your credibility Mr. Dayananda. It is certain that you will not make any meaningful changes.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:24 AM

Nothing going to happen waste of time and money, same thing will be happening as Presidential Poll. Sri Lankan are helpless

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:34 AM

U better resign, u r not fit enough for this post

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:40 AM

I think there should be atleast two foreign monitors like a shadow to the EC or atleast just by his side from 08.00 on 8th April until the official results are announced.

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:45 AM

Is this another bluff on the part of the Elections Commissioner?

    Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:54 AM

Mr. Dayananda, don't bluff gullible Sri Lankans with your promises. All know what happened at the last Presidential election. Good Day
