Darusman defines ‘accountability’

Marzuki Darusman who heads the UN Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka last Friday said that Sri Lanka should explain what happened on the 40,000 deaths during the country’s north war, the New York based Inner City Press reported.

Responding to a question in New York regarding the definition of ‘accountability’ mentioned in the Panel report, Darusman said, “…accountability means to explain what happened on the 40,000 deaths.”

Reconciliation should work both ways. Tamils only ask for accountability for killings of tamils. What about accountability for the thousands of other communities killed by the Tamil tigers?? The existing LTTE support groups openly operating should be held liable for this.

Accountability also means disclosing how the 40000 was arrived at. If Darusmann could let the GOSL know how he arrived at 40000 i am sure the explanation will be forthcoming.

Before Sri Lanka explains the 40,000 deaths, Darusman should ask how those who are trumpeting this, what evidence they had to come up with this figure. And if a satisfactory explanation is not forthcoming the GoSL should seek damages for libel against those who claim this canard.
