Customs seized two containers of textiles, tiles and shoes worth around Rs.30 million imported under the pretext of importing PVC doors from China today, officials said.

The Director of Customs Ranjan Kanakasabay said two persons were arrested when they came to pay a duty of Rs.300,000 for importing PVC doors instead of the real import duty of Rs.10 million which is the price for the textiles seized. (Supun Dias) (Pix by Kushan Pathiraja)

Refused to bribe Saturday, 21 April 2012 09:37 AM

Do the cameras and officials go around regularly filming opening of containers ? seems the unknown sealed container contents were already known to the customs, why the clip showing breaking of seals ?

Corruption is everywhere, surely its the norm in this country, most get away with it so you can't blame these guys trying to save a bit of tax that would only be wasted on surplus ports & airports
There mistake was in not bribing customs I guess.

How many customs guys are inspecting two containers, look at their bribery faces. This is a masive propaganda, we have the worst customs officers in the world. All curupt ones will go to hell

I know from speaking to many of the importers that the customs is the temple of corruption. No container will be released if they are not bribed. The customs can deny this as much as they want but it is the truth. This guy made the cardinal mistake of not giving the amount they wanted. These guys will sell the country down the road if they can for the filthy lucre. There is no one above board in the customs, if there was he would not last very long.

You judgmental Pricks! Don't generalize all customs officers by putting them in the same category. There are some very honest and righteous officers in the customs. For example the Director of Customs who seized the goods is one of the most honest officers in the customs. I would know because my father used to work under him. There are also many other officers including my father who do their jobs honestly but get a bad name because of the dishonest officers. It's also not just the dishonest customs officers who are to blame but the importers as well, who stoop to such low levels in order to make a quick buck. Niyaz, the fact that you mentioned you know many of the importers who bribe the dishonest customs officers proves how cheap and unreliable your information/views are! As for Shifaz, the fact that you think our customs officer are the worst in the world shows us how little you know about the world!
