The president has said that Customs Officials must serve the country, but not the individuals in their performance of duty as the Customs contributes the biggest share of state revenue.

Addressing a ceremony held today to give away appointment letters to new recruits of 280 Assistant Customs Superintendents and 91 Customs Inspectors at the Temple Trees, President Mahinda Rajapaksa stressed the revenue collection by the state at sea ports is not something alien to Sri Lanka or inherited from the European rulers.

“Our ancient chronicles such as the ‘Godavaya' inscriptions have vividly explained about tax collections at our sea ports by the king or his representatives. The tariff or Customs duty collection has been done in a highly organised manner that did not harm the payee. It was purely for the maintenance of state duties,” President Rajapaksa said. (Sandun A. If they serving the country and are doing a ghovernment service why are they paid rewards? They are paid millions and millions as rewards. Is itn to keep waya from corruption?

There are officers in other government services who are doing valuable services andatleast some are very honest and doing a dedicated service which is important for the society but they do not get rewarded.

In my opinion paying rewards for them is completely incorrect.

Are we going to pay a percentaage of court fines to judges!

Customs officers could be making most of the money in Sri Lanka.

But 99% of that money is spend abroad.

If the import duties were reasonable and fair for everyone this huge drain of much needed cash could be reduced.

When is he going to address the corruption by all the customs officers... Top to Bottom.
They are some of the highest earning state employees thanks to all the bribes received.
