The Colombo Magistrates court today refused to grant a search warrant requested by the Criminal Investigations Department to search UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office and the Biyagama press of Wijeya Newspapers, publishers of Daily Mirror, Court documents seen today stated.

IP Chandana of the CID filing a report before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Chandani Meegoda on Saturday submitted that the IGP had complained to the Director of the CID about the printing of defamatory literature and stacking of Posters and hand bill at the Wijeya newspapers printing press at Biyagama and hiding XLR fire arms to use against the government at Ranil Wickremesingha's office.

The magistrate observed that the police had not produced any poster hand bill or T-shirt to prove the allegation, according to the Court documents.  (YP & TFT)

Now MR see... Crocodiles in Teacup !.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:55 AM

This craze for searching the homes of opposition members and supporters has got out of hand. The CID has made complete fools of themselves. EVEN if MR wins this election do we still need an IGP like Mahinda Balasuriya ?

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:59 AM

See the issue rationally. don't be so emotional when you make comments. Remove you MR glasses. Now see, is this act good or bad.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:01 AM

yep people are not fool ,,,,,,,,,,again

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:01 AM

I cannot even compare this kind of activities, with those of children. Even children are very much smarter than this kind of politicians.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 03:03 AM

The Government is worried about not coming to power, that’s why so much of allegation against SF

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:03 AM

I think you are from Singapore. Singapore is a very value, discipline country. I think you need to remove your MR glasses and see the issue clearly. most important fact is do you like police to search your house with out any reason. Forget about party politics. We need have a law and order in this country.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:03 AM

I hope and pray this type of dirty tricks will end from 27th.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:03 AM

hen ling, it is the CID (this regimes keep) that is requesting for the search warrant...

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:04 AM

Yes, Hen Ling. People are not fools. We can at least read and understand a news item before rushing to comment but sadly you even ignore that basic requirement in your haste to defend a corrupt regime. We are not interested in your theories of Chinese Tigers and Roosters because we know there is a Swan in the horizon!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:05 AM

One faliure over the other. Signs of desperation by the govt. When you have to go you have to go. Like it or not. Hours are tcking by.

    Cant wait for the change.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:10 AM

Mohan. Y is this man. think wisely. Don't say that you like people to come and search your house as they wish. Treat others as you like them to treat you. We need code of conduct, discipline society.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:23 PM

We totally condemn this act. DM is totally neutral newspaper. Why do they harm it. If same people come back to power what would happen to democracy?

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:13 AM

We need to make public comments for bad things. We need to stand for our rights. We need build a culture that respect people. Now it is not too late. Can change this. SF thought us to stand to our values. Thank you sir for that.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:14 AM

Mr. Officer. Each one of us has a weapon with us to be used on the 26th which is called a vote and be sure that it will be used against corruption and misuse of power. Sir, shame on you and your masters.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:32 PM

I hope the end is near for MR and his goonies.. and I hope it brings in a new era of enlightenment, morality, and democracy... this is one of the final fire bursts of a dying regime..

    Monday, 25 January 2010 05:47 PM

Yes I remember 'Batalanda.' Have you forgotten the Batalada Commission, set up by CBK, which couldn't find any wrongdoing there?

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:24 AM

Use the weapon wisely on 26th no one can take that from you - Jayawewa GSF

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:25 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:25 AM

The magistrate refused the warrant and not Ranil

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:55 PM

Exactly! That is the thing that most sri lankan people CAN NOT do!!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:29 AM

Police should be ashmed. Lets bear this up for two more days.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:31 AM

Why is the CID not searching Mervyn's residence for weapons? Is it because Mervyn who operates with Police protection has been given a blank cheque to eliminate his political opponents???
to I do not wnat to bet the Rs. 40 milion as this money will go to run his dirty trade and diry tricks!!!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:32 AM

    Madness!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:33 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:34 AM

Sign of desperation from opposition to win more votes by making more news towards the polling day, poor tactics, people are not fools.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:38 AM

The second coming of Mahinda should be a very interesting era in Sri Lanka if it isn't preceded by the exodus (of those who can afford it!).

    Monday, 25 January 2010 01:14 PM

Acts of desperation as the noose tightens." Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely".

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:38 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:41 AM

God makes them mad before he destroys them. This is being proved correct

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:40 AM

these sort of tactics only proves the point that this gov. will do anything to win...the more the govt. do things like this, the better its for the opposition..

Please Do not insult the only genuine gentlemen in Sri Lankan Politics.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:51 AM

Mohandev, many of us have nothing to hide but would we "voluntrarily" invite people to walk into our homes and offices to search for non existent material? There should be a basis for such a search. He is the leader of the opposition in parliament and a former PM and entitled to some measure of dignity, surely

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:43 AM

Desperation at its peak !!!. They are trying their maximum to make a hole in the boat. I guess that it won't matter much, as 99% of the Sri Lankans have decided on whom to vote.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:43 AM

This way, TID might even come knocking on our doors, for posting comments on DM.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:46 AM

Making public statement like this will reduce further votes to SF, why you can't keep your mouth shut. We will vote for him, but you smelly mouths will reduce our vote!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:49 AM

suddenly the CID & TID are busy with there work.......but the funny is they are not searching the gota house?????????

He was born in the Chinese Lunar year of the Tiger 1950. This is the golden year of the Tiger, Tigers are Honest and Valiant !!!! Master Mahinda, had his golden years, Year of the Rooster, now its time to eat the Rooster or simply disappear into the jungle as a Walikukul.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:28 AM

This shows how paranoid the GOSL is and desperate safeguard their ill-gotten. If voters think alike then they change without whining about corruption and thuggery afterward.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:10 AM

For your info, this year is Metal Tiger. Unfortunately Metal has a destructive relationship with the Tiger’s fixed element, Wood. In fact this is the fifth in a run of six years governed by an unlucky conflict of elements. This should come as no surprise given the recent history of US and world financial markets, massive numbers of foreclosures in the housing sector, and the terrible tragedy that is Iraq today. so Rooster is still better, my friend.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:30 AM

My Dear Friends, Now Its not about PA ,UNP ,JVP ,TNA ,SLMC or LTTE, ITS ALL about SF or MR. Lets Decide tomorow

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:42 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:42 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:20 AM

Until today I was thinking to vote for MR, but I changed my mind and vote for SF. Sorry MR, you yourself spoiling the soup.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:46 AM

The obscure ex-711-Store manager is calling the shots while being a foreign national.

Where else in the world would national security be entrusted to a citizen of a foreign country who has pledged allegiance to another nation and its constitution?

Despite that we are still searching for foreign boogeymen among NGOs while the biggest sits within the ranks of the government.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:50 AM

OOO the 27th Jan ..the 27th Jan...hahahah Gota Gota....Can you remember General Janaka Perera. Hahahah Gota...Gota...Can you remember Lasantha W...Yes...Time is tiking...Hahahaha 27th Morning people will know...hahahahah.....

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:23 AM

Shame! Ridiculous! Undemocratic! We do not want this type of people for the second term.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:26 AM

What a disgusting country we are living in. I have lost all regard for this government. When we as a Nation should rejoice in the hope of a lasting peace and a united people, absolute disrespect for the law by the government and low, 3rd class tactics to stay in power has once again divided us on all fronts. No wonder many wish to migrate, even sacrificing tob jobs and perks.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:58 AM

THIS SHOWS AT LEAST JUDICIAL INDEPENDANCE IS UNTOUCHED

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:28 AM

Is this Mahinda Balasuriya the police IGP or a minister of the govt?

We are becoming a country like Myanmar day by day.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:30 AM

    On 27th

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:31 AM

hen ling, ur feng shui is misplaced here. The Tiger referred to here is neither metal nor wood....it is DEAD! 2010 is the year the Sri Lanka will rise from a 30 year slumber and commence its rapid progress to become one of (if not THE) most developed nations in Asia. Beware all you paper tigers, hot air dragons and all other pretenders: Sri Lanka has set sail......

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:31 AM

Dude, read the news again... it's the CID who has requested the Search Warrant. Not Ranil!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:33 AM

THEY CAN STILL SEARCH WITHOUT A WARRANT UNDER EMERGENCY ,LIKE WHAT THEY DID TO KARU JAYASOORIYA'S WIFE'S RESIDENCE.I THINK THE POLICE ARE NOW SCARED TO DO SO.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:36 AM

This should be a wake up call for the voters thinking of voting for the KING and for those who are still on the fence. Is this the type of Government we want ? Wake up now..

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:36 AM

This is exactly why we need a change.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:18 AM

thank god at least a little justice still prevails in this country.......

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:37 AM

It should have been a warrant to search mervin's house. He needs to be careful after the 26th,a lot of them are going to celebrate the victory

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 02:21 AM

They tried searching Karu's house, now Ranil's - what next? Why MR who boasts he hs 40 yrs political experience, so scared of people like SF, Ranil, Karu? Why not search houses of the WW, Rohitha Abey, some the Buddhist monks supporting the UPFA etc. Genuine Colombo citizens are not blood-thirsty. If Ranil used thuggery, he wd hv won the 2005 elections.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:38 AM

you do not now they in panic. just one day left.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:48 AM

Tin Tin ... Hey! buddy learn to use "Anonymous Proxy Servers" for all postings; an absolute must for any post in Sr Lanka if you don't want goons in uniform knocking on your door at 2 a.m.

Can't imagine Ranil being able to fire a pea shooter or a water pistol let alone something that goes "boom"!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:50 AM

This time Majestrate going crazy. He wants produce evidences of defamatory items to court in order to issue search warrants.
How can one produce defamatory items before place is searched?
Police acting on tip offs and not evidences. This is accepted norms.
Perhaps majestrate wants promotion to districk court...

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:56 AM

Why that this government is taking such a foolish decisions
