Hussain Razeen, the Maldivian national whose body was found with stab injuries in Piliyandala, was a notorious gangster wanted for murder in his country, sources said today.

He had been arrested for murder in 2007 by the Maldives Police, and again in 2010 for threatening police officers and their families.

The deceased had been living in Pepiliyana and running a business at the time his body was found, but the Maldives Embassy in Sri Lanka is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Piliyandala Police said two police teams were conducting investigations and they hoped to arrest some suspects soon. (Piyumi Fonseka and Hasini Rupasinghe)
