Intervention by the Catholic Church in Orissa has enabled the release of 19 Sri Lankan fishermen, who were held after exceeding the limits of territorial waters in the Indian Ocean.

The fishermen were released after Father Dibakar Parichha, Secretary of Justice, Peace and Development Commission of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, took up the initiative to help in their release.

These fishermen were among the 24 held in the Indian territory for over two months. The other five will be released later.

Ten of them held in Jagatsinghpur prison were released on October 1 and nine others, including five Christians,  were set free on October 3.

The fishermen will stay at the priest’s house till all the official formalities of their return are completed.

“We can feel the agony and suffering you have experienced in recent months in prison. This is a moment of joy for all of you. You will return home soon: look to the future with hope,” said Archbishop John Barwa of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar. (Source: Asia News)
