Government start their promising work. Nature too support it. These are the canals can be used for multi-purpose tasks.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 10:37 AM

Even the nature is supporting Governemnt decission.

Why only Muslims, Mr. Rafiq don't be communal minded. What about other religion.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 10:28 AM

Pavement people removed. Now canal people.Next shanties.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 10:27 AM

First of all please provide a decent dwelling places for all those living in shanties in Colombo and then clear the area. How can you make Colombo the epicenter of Asia's miracles with those shanties unsuitable for human dwelling? Over to those politicians who appeared on election cutouts recently with the slogan "lets make Colombo the epicenter of Asia's miracle.

Some real good views and comments with a lot to think about if the necessary authorities and government decision makers and shakers are reading these. All people living in these areas of canals, by beach/sea sides, railway tracks and other ill holes that need to be fixed with proper planning and permanent monitored solutions. I feel the government have solutions which should be done in a systematic approach and not political favoritism.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 10:04 AM

Where did you get these statistics?? Rubbish!! The comments mainly seem anti-government! May be the supporters are silent readers reserving comments until they see some improvement.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 09:57 AM

Please do not remove Muslim residents.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 09:49 AM

What are Ministers & officials for if the President has to intervene for everything.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 07:31 AM

They are squatters who voted the govt in. Now lets rise above politics and fix this problem by providing them better housing and prevent any more squatters from resettling in the cleared canal banks. Over to you, Chairman UDA!

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 09:21 AM

We always blame the government for this. It is time we citizens act responsibly as well. When have we done anything about this!! or any other issue on social justice???

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 09:11 AM

Think how to Change/Shift the Capital (Main City) of SriLanka.U cannot destroy the all unauthorised houses and other Constructions because 75% are wrong.Better Systems analysis and planning is needed.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 09:08 AM

Some of these unauthorised houses have received the blessings of politicians who have gone to the extent of using their influence to provide electricity/water connections etc with a view to get the highest no of preferential votes.
President should also look into the cases of large scale filling of lands earmarked as protected areas by the Lands Reclamation Board by politicians and influential persons including the now abandoned Presidential Palace project of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike. Douglas

WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE LIVING NEAR SEA BEACH??

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 08:20 AM

The Irony is the concern for the people due to flood threats or a good opportunity to get them out under guise of this excuse.
    .

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 08:17 AM

In the first place people should not have been allowed to settle on the banks of canals, railway lines, tank reservations etc etc. Even this late, we welcome the correct decision, but again it should be implemented fully and not leave room for them to come back. It is equally important that they should be provided with alternate dwellings before eviction.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 08:06 AM

    Dear Ranil,
Your comments are timely. But what is needed is a permenant solution by means of resettling these families in an alternate location. They are Sri Lankan citizens & deserve a roof over their heads. Most are working people who are not rich enough to afford their own land. This is what must be addressed.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 08:02 AM

Every Municipality is responsible for this, who allowed to buiid unauthorised buildings for party supporters. There is no proper drainage system for water to flow. Water stagnated everywhere. Next will be Cholera. Are they going to wait till people die as a pattern every year and forget it when the rain stops.

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 07:44 AM

before clearing them please give them a place to stay

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 07:42 AM

    Dear Mr President,

why not at the same time dismantling their housing and making the drainage wider. this is the biggest problem we have. There is a lot of sympathy and people blame the authorites when they dismantle the unathorised buildings. but thats the issue we have to address.

We are used to seeing and hearing this at every monsoon period.

enough of it now. lets have a permanant solution.
