The Cabinet will meet under President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the former LTTE heartland of Kilinochchi on 14 July, Minister Maithripala Sirisena said today. He added that Cabinet has also decided to meet at every district in future.

Cabinet normally meets at Temple Trees in Colombo ever Wednesday but has at times convened in Kandy as well.

The Capital of a country is decided by the place where the cabinet or parliament meets. If they meet in every nook and corner, all Sri Lankans have to pay all their travelling ans accomodation.. Oh what a sin.

    dave Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:19 AM

Wise decision. Sign of decentralizing the power.

    Sanath R Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:20 AM

This is merely a propaganda gimmick to hoodwink the ordinary people of this country. This not only a waste of public money, but will pose a threat to the public convenience as well with all their security contingencies and other of their entourage as well. What we need is sound constructive decisions to be made and to have those implemented for the benefit of the country and masses, not just road shows etc.

    KABAB Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:51 AM

Soon we can see mini parliaments in all districts. Parents of students in each district can save money by taking their children to the district parliament raher than Sri Jayawardenapura. Good luck Sri Lanka.

    Wasantha Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:05 AM

Good idea. As there is nothing to discuss serious and effective for the country, you all can go all over the places and enjoy at the expense of the tax payer.

    lankaman Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:07 AM

    1. Who will foot the bill for travel to all corners of island and will there be use of state helicopters for this?
    2. If its only a closed door session with regional people not having an opportunity to meet the participants, whats the point of going regional?

POL MAMA Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:10 AM

GOSL- SPEND THAT ADDITIONAL EXPENSES ON THOSE WHO ARE IN NEED- LIKE THOSE AFFECTED BY THE WAR+SOLDIERS WHO ARE DISABLED-OVER TO YOU MR.PRESIDENT & CO

    Nishantha Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:11 AM

Another public funded picnic for the people's "servants " ! Think of the millions which will be wasted on renovating /building a venue for this tamasha in the particular district , on food and drink , security , transport , whilst killing the productivity of the town concerned for the day as the roads will be closed from dawn to dusk ! Go Sri Lanka ! _ a banana republic if ever there was one !!!

    Chuti Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:18 AM

Other than being a waste of money and a tremendous inconvenience to the public, they are being completely insensitive to the feelings of the Tamil people.

    ajith Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:20 AM

For god sake why does every one see every thing in a negative manner. It is good that they along with the President meet them in this manner. Each province and the districts has their own problems and the ministers and MP's who have never been out of Colombo specially to North and East is a grand opportunity.
It is a recognition to each district.
    Good move by the government.

    Roshan Thursday, 24 June 2010 08:12 AM

What a funny joke.. rather than meet in Kili, meet the need of the people in Kili..

    sanjaya Thursday, 24 June 2010 08:18 AM

Donot worry... Sri lankan's are very rich. They can afford to spend money lavishly because there are lot of countries to lend money to us.
The money spent by these foolish acts will be paid by generations and generations to come in the future...

    SW Thursday, 24 June 2010 08:44 AM

Figuring out new ways to burden masses, is this intentional or due to ignorance?

Gayan Samarasekara Thursday, 24 June 2010 09:08 AM

How long will this stupid drama continue??? Until the GSP trouble is forgotten??? Keep our fools up with those activities..

    ND Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:13 AM

That is what I thought too. All these politicians need to see what is going on in different parts of the country. They need to see the good and the bad. That will hopefully make them more sensitive to national pulse.
My only hope is that they are going to keep their eyes and ears open in their travels. And if this endeavour brings results like R Premadasa's travels, it will not be in vain.

Cleaver Mind Thursday, 24 June 2010 09:50 AM

Wasting tax payer's money again, why not MR, have an conference call for his cabinet dude, we could save, lots including money, reduce traffic, the hassle....

    bandara Thursday, 24 June 2010 10:22 AM

Great move. Closer to the people. Solve their spot problems. Allocate specific time frames to talk district problems at the cabinet meetings with solutions to come along.

    GOG Thursday, 24 June 2010 11:02 AM

why not go and have the meeting is different countries.all can have free world tours.

    SriLankan Thursday, 24 June 2010 11:10 AM

I hope they all permanantly shift to Kili and take the parliament and their ministries with them. Irrespective of where they will be no productive work will be done except closing of roads and waisting money.

    Kamal Thursday, 24 June 2010 11:21 AM

I can see lots of joker through the comments. They alway see the negative side of the govt.initiatives. If you are a Sri Lankan, see positively. Whether in Colombo or in any other town, Govt. should spend money to hold Cabinet. On the other hand you guys travel all around the country and see what the Govt. has done without becoming a frog in the well.

    Malin Thursday, 24 June 2010 11:28 AM

This is stupid. Adding more expenditure on Travelling (even TNA MPs live in Colombo). extra security etc.

    Mahadenadmutta Thursday, 24 June 2010 02:05 PM

Hey Folks, You guys do not understand the stratergy and the economics behind the move. Some are
    1. When we capture a land we have to rule it. In what other way can the government rule it other than by holding a session there.?
    2. We could improve the local economy by building a big hall to have the session, hotel to accomodate the Hon Ministers, and rooms to house the drivers and security officers.
    Cont.
    Mahadenamutta

    Mahadenadmutta Thursday, 24 June 2010 02:06 PM

    Cont.
    3. We could feed the locals with the leftovers after lunch and dinner.
    4. We could control the population by killing a couple of unsuspecting road users when the Minister's high speed entourage travel to Killi.
    5. We could give some room for the Colombo folks to use the City roads when they are away in Killi.
    6. We could expand this program in the future and hold sessions in Rome, Paris, New York, Toronto, and Sidney, because our people are also there.
    7. The only downside is the inconvenience for the Hon Ministers. But they are prepared for it.
    Concluded

Chinthanayo public stunt to increase his vote bank

    jehan Friday, 25 June 2010 03:38 AM

Excellent....... No one else to think like this...........................

    sena Friday, 25 June 2010 04:23 AM

Good as much as they meet, let them also go round the districts and address the needs of the people. Everyone pays Taxes and the Cabinet which is paid by the taxpayers should not only work for all taxpayers but should also be seen by all tax payers. Taxes do not understand Sinhala, Tamil or Muslim

    Bala Friday, 25 June 2010 04:30 AM

Fool - how does this stupid act decentralise power - you don't know anything.

    Bala Friday, 25 June 2010 04:34 AM

What nonsensical thinking - who is the "them" that the Cabinet will meet in the district except the suckers in the provincial council.

    malkanthi Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:35 AM

    some absurd fellows i suppose.

    Sammodha Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:07 AM

Can the people meet the ministers or the president in person to discuss their grievences?
or is this going to be another added burden on the economy?

    Ram Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:08 AM

So you want to bring Kili as your capital city. Then chase all the people who lived there for generations. Next you will say it was the ancient kingdom.

    Gyan Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:09 AM

OH!!!!! OUR GREAT MINISTERS WILL HAVE NICE TOURS ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY.... AT THE EXPENSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS... THIS IS A ANOTHER SIGN OF A FAST GROWING ECONOMY...

Bluff Bluff Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:11 AM

Ooh my goodness, the environment pollution is going to spread into other areas also!

Bluff Bluff Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:12 AM

    Who really asked for it?

    kumara Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:15 AM

meeting will be a picnic. There are PC councils with ministers to take care of many matters but now cabinet want to go and meet in PC. Security, traveling, trafic problems for peoples, unwanted work on goverment agents by arrangements, journalist have to travel,
Well all these things prove that all of them want to make news not to develop the country. After the LTTE, Now they are making news on their own and results is just a mesh and killing time and doing a political job with low level of education.

    Josh Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:17 AM

now for the cabinet to meet, they need to have a meeting room, then accommodation facilities for the 50 odd cabinet members and da other officials... plus the cost of transport for the 200 or 300 vehicles that will be traveling all the way up there.... then the cost of providing security in the premises and the surrounding areas...

isnt all that a waste of money??

    shaffaath Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:23 AM

they should go all over the island .

this will boost the Infrastructure of the district.and will be moral booster to many in the district.Other wise these jokers will never go and see the districts in Sl.

I agree all above but just thought on a positive note.

    Dinesh Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:24 AM

It's a fun time.....This is what is called Wonder of the World.

    Srilankan Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:27 AM

We have Provincial Councils, District Devalopment committes etc for regional work and supervision.
Cabinet is there to make Nation level policy and implementation with moving proper laws and regulations through the Parliament.

These people don't know what they are doing and what they are suposed to do.
As Knox said Giving good ride to MODA SINHALAYA.(Including Myself)

    DireStraits Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:30 AM

Are you talking from the maternity ward ? Congratulations for choosing SL for the entrance. As for tours.. they have been going around the planet at the expense of public funds for decades now why would it change for this trip?

    Citizen Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:33 AM

To get a taste of what Eelam would have been, if Eelam was gained! Prabha will be rolling in his grave!!

    malkanthi Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:34 AM

Absolutely, not only waste of money, inconvenience to the free movement of general public. We are only interested in implementation of constructive decision taken !

Senior Citizenu Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:03 AM

Waste of money for security & other arrangements. Are they going to discuss only problems of the district. Another gimmick to waste our money while the jokers will now parade in the districts.

    senevi Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:38 AM

WITH THE MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT THEY & WILL & CAN DO ANYTHING THEY DESIRE.JUST DON'T WASTE TIME ON THINKING DEEP INTO THESE THINGS.

    Ramzeel Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:39 AM

Bread and Milk food prices were increased this week to spend for this tamasha by the Govt. Why the choice of place, its utter madness and all Sri Lankans can only laugh at the Govt. and its foolishness.

    farshard Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:41 AM

WHAT IS THE USE FOR PUBLIC???NOTHING....

    willows Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:43 AM

what a joke, at whose expense for all these thamashas??and what good we can expect when nothing happening in Colombo meetings???

Kumar Wijayasekara Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:44 AM

It is interesting to note that there is not a single comment above in favour of this foolish idea. I think now the people are begining to understand where we are heading for.

roshan raz Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:44 AM

ha ha ha. this time kilinochchi, next session in hambanthota. they will require a new building... and someone will get a good contract to construct buildings for parliament meetings. from next year they will take it to singapore, uk , usa etc etc...

    willows Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:45 AM

since this government came to power its always waste of money ? and now increase the cost of living of the poor, to subsidise their thamashas?? again these so called poor deserved this punishment as they elected this government

true lankan Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:45 AM

What a waste of public funds Are they travelling by AIR or by ROAD? better declare curfew so that they can fly on the road.

local boy Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:51 AM

stupid decision. waste of time and peoples money.

    ruwanthaj Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:59 AM

Cabinet is supposed to take a decision regarding the whole country. Since the administrative capital is in colombo it the best place to meet. besides the colombo is more equipped to facilitate such meeting.

This will only create more burden and hardships for the already hit ordinary citizens .

Actually at this moment I do not know the reason behind this move but would like to request to reconsider the move

    Musthaq Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:03 AM

These kind of bad decisions are always there by these govts. and the saddest thing is as they have the voting support to do whatever they want. Also the voters are so poor they have no choice, so this trend will continue. what a sad condition.

    Gyan Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:10 AM

YES I AGREE...TILL NOW THEY WERE TOURING ALL AROUND THE WORLD... SO NOW WHY DONT WE LET THEM TOUR IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.... AND HAVE LOOK AT THEIR BELOVED SUPPORTERS WHO ELECTED THEM TO THE PARLIAMENT.... THIS CHANCE COMES TO THE PUBLIC ONLY ONCE IN AN ELECTION PERIOD....

    Ravana Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:13 AM

Theatrics and more dramas, the Lankans' can't be fooled anymore but this may be an attempt to fool the EU and the UN !
