The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) said yesterday it had received many complaints from Facebook users regarding profiles that contain material derogatory to Buddhism.

Senior Information Security Engineer Rohana Palliyaguru of SLCERT, the national centre for cyber security, speaking to Daily Mirror said several complaints had been made concerning Facebook users who had circulated material that degraded Buddhism.

However, Mr. Palliyaguru said they were not in a position to block such accounts under the current conditions.

Therefore he urged Facebook users with similar grievances, to make their complaints directly to the Facebook.

“If they receive a considerable amount of such complaints concerning a particular account, they will take measures to de-activate such accounts,” he added.

SLCERT earlier this year announced that it had received more than 650 complaints within about eight months concerning Facebook crimes and said the majority of them were on fake accounts and password thefts.

SLCERT, upon investigating the complaints, took measures to cancel the fake accounts.

These are the types of liberals who scream about human rights and 'so called' freedoms. These freedoms of the 'West' are applied when its advantageous to their needs. Freedom of speech is one of the private needs created by the judo-christian west. The common good or the what's good for the masses / society as a whole should be considered over 'so called' "personal" freedoms.

F/B used only to communicate with friends, obviously you know them by their profile. Why worry about strangers?

    nudebeach Friday, 22 July 2011 10:47 AM

This is 'OK' when we think about the Nude Beach that will be set up opposite the Kaluthara temple

    ROSHEN Friday, 22 July 2011 10:31 AM

I totally agree with the sparks. There is a suggestion. Sidhartha is the name of the Buddha before enlighment. We usually use Gauthama Buddha.

    puchi Friday, 22 July 2011 09:56 AM

Not all monks are foolish, No religion should be degraded!!!

    managala Friday, 22 July 2011 07:49 AM

i didnt get you ? which freedom and restrict what ?

    Kesavan Friday, 22 July 2011 07:47 AM

Simple solution....just block it in the local proxy...like what we did to tamilnet. There are plenty of proxy by pass sites to over come that...!!!

    malkanthi Friday, 22 July 2011 06:17 AM

Buddhism is the way to freedom, so why restrict?

    Ben Friday, 22 July 2011 05:07 AM

    ha ha...well said !

    banda Friday, 22 July 2011 04:34 AM

Totally agree with you, the people who practice the religion in public are the most corroup in the country, is this more degrading than FB.

    Ramesh Friday, 22 July 2011 04:37 AM

    You are spot on mate..

    Mohamed Friday, 22 July 2011 01:14 AM

I dont think any religion permits to degrade another religion, a person who follows his religion correctly will not do this kind of work. very pathetic

How can anyone degenarate Buddhism - by doing so they degenerate themself ! And also Sri Lanka or Sinhalese are not sole propriators of Buddhism. Buddism has a universal belonging and anyone who process, interlligence, wisdom gnosis can only understand it. So any Tom, dick and Harry and Harriet( Harriet added for gender balance) can put anything into FB and true Buddist won't get uspet of others indulge in idiotic silly fun. Just have a laugh with equanimity - think still there are lot not reach the goal of grown ups or fully grown humans. That's it!. Why get excited when one see a fool?

    citiz Friday, 22 July 2011 04:03 AM

SImple thing: REPORT INCIDENT TO FACEBOOK, they will take action.

    Hash Friday, 22 July 2011 03:50 AM

its not only buddism.. all the religions are been degraded,,,

backstreet boys Friday, 22 July 2011 03:42 AM

before pointing fingers at Global Social Sites and International Artistes... the corruption and abuse in this very land by those who hail this religion is something we should give thought to first

    lionking Friday, 22 July 2011 03:31 AM

so what ? isn't this freedom of expression. Chill out dudes. don't you have much more important work to do like preventing unauthorised credit card transactions.

    SCW Friday, 22 July 2011 03:23 AM

Sri Lankan's have to realise that you can't go around blocking sites just because you find it offensive. Degrading any religion is in bad taste but blocking freedom of speech is worse.

Nishantha Rajapaksa Friday, 22 July 2011 03:22 AM

Please raid those people who make fake profiles. This is becoming a big issue. Fake ID accounts are ruining the image of our country and making Facebook a mess.

    ishan Friday, 22 July 2011 03:10 AM

Yes yo get all sort of stuff in FB......It s not limited to Buddhism....Some might not believe thats there are pages/groups having names like #### Jesus Christ etc..(just serach)....Funny thing is even they recieve many complaints I dnt think FB taking action against these pages ..I know as I signed such a petition kind of to ban a particular page. But its still there. Best thing is not to take things v serious as there are psycho FB users

    sparks Friday, 22 July 2011 03:07 AM

Sinhalese buddhists themselves are the degraders of buddhism to the world. We require a ban on sale of alchohol and meat on Poya to stop us consuming the same. Where is the basic tenant of buddhism that involves discipline and practice? However we allow the sale of fish on Poya, why? is it not a life? However we are ready to plant Buddha Statues in any dirty street corner and even in a location predominantly consisting persons of another religeon to show our extremism than our ignorance to what that great teacher Sidhartha Gauthama taught. We sinhalese are an insult to buddhism.

Grace Perera Friday, 22 July 2011 03:03 AM

Buddhisam was degraded not by facebook but by its own Buddhist monks where our foolish people dnt see.

    lol Friday, 22 July 2011 02:29 AM

ok...simple solution, BLOCK THE FACEBOOK... we can become popular like some of the middle eastern counties ...LOL
