The price of a loaf of bread is expected to increase by Rs 3 tomorrow, due to slashed subsidies as international wheat flour prices increase, the All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Chairman N.K. Jayawardena said.

“As the discount of Rs.225 given to the bakery owners for 50Kg of wheat flour was cut off by Rs.150, the price of 1 Kg of flour was increased by three rupees”, Jayawardena explained.

The subsidy was cut down as the price of wheat flour in the international market increased. Along with this price increase, the prices of other bakery products too will increase, he said.

The new price of a loaf of bread will be between Rs.41 to Rs.45. “There is drop about 50 percent of bread sales. We have to sell the bread through intermediaries”, he added.

“As cost of production has increased, the Association’s Executive Committee will decide tomorrow about the price hike. But definitely a price hike can be expected”, Mr. Jayawardena said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror the Director General of the Consumer Affairs Authority Mrs. Chandrika Tillkaratne said that they have not been informed of a price hike.

Well, I believe the typical response from the government will be "Do not eat the westerners' food, only eat rice! But, is rice affordable?

In light of the increasing price of bread consider switching to rice. My experience in switching to rice has been very good for the health especially people who are weight conscious. Please note that I am not supporting a price increase or the government’s move to slashing of subsidy for bread!

Why do we wear shoes..is it cold here..why do we wear banians, shirts , trousers & neck tie in hot sun..do we have winter here..Similarly why do we consume bread here..do we have a surplus produce of wheat flower here..and have nothing to do with it? -

Why not, Now the price of rice has come down to 45-55. People spend more to take medicine after eating Bread. So what's wrong having rice even if it's bit high in price, and refrain from illnesses ???

the 18th Amendment has nothing to do so with the price of flour going up. Those who are relating the two need to remove their politically biased glasses. We heard recently that the latest US national debt is 12 trillion $ and forcasted to go up to 22 Trillion in 5 years, I suppose that is because Obama was appointed Prez, eh? Lets think in an educated way!!!
