Blast in Batti

A blast has been reported in Karadiyanaru, Batticaloa a short while ago. Our reporter in the area said that a police team has been sent to the area and atleast 15 people including policemen are reported to be killed.

Military spokesman Major General Udaya Medawala speaking to Daily Mirror online said that a container with explosives being used for development work in the East accidentally exploded while it was being shifted. The explosives were to be used to blast rocks.

The blast triggered a series of blasts in the container, the Military spokesman said. When contacted the Batticaloa hospital said that several people who were injured in the blast have been admitted to the hospital.

State media reported that the Karadiyanaru police station had recieved extensive damages from the blast and there were several casualties.
