India’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) says that they will await more details on claims made by Sri Lanka that President Mahinda Rajapakse helped the ruling Congress party win the General Elections in Tamil Nadu last year by agreeing to stop using heavy weapons during the last stages of the war.

Shri Nalin S. Kohli, Convener of the BJP speaking to Daily Mirror online said that it would appear strange for any foreign country to claim to have played a role in the internal workings of the democratic elections of another country.

He added that while it seemed ‘improbable’, if found to be true it would raise serious questions and that more details would then be required to understand the nature of these claimed transactions.

In an interview on Daily Mirror online Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga said that President Mahinda Rajapakse helped the Indian Congress party win the General Elections in Tamil Nadu by reaching an agreement with the Indian government.

The agreement reached had been to put a stop to the usage of heavy weaponry during the last stages of the war in Sri Lanka, in order to help the Congress garner votes in Tamil Nadu and win the General elections.   (Daily Mirror online)

The most senior civil servant should have given that interview supporting a particular presidential election cadidate - it is against the election law of our land. Secondly he should not have said MR helped Congress to win - it is highly undiplomatic & unprofessional.

Mr. Weerantunga has stepped out of his line of duty, as the first civil servant of this country, and the country now has to pay the price!

As the 'number-one' public servant in this country, he should not have said this! This is a disgrace to the Sri Lankan Administrative Service, and to our forefathers, who kept their dignity, against political pressure!

Several weeks ago it was the Professor, who bungled with his claim; then Bandula G.; and, now Mr. Lalith Weeratunga! Each having his own "swansong" ? ? ?

Who is this BJP guy to question this. His party got a sound beating at their general election. Congress is the only sensible party in India and there is nothing wrong in supporting it!

Another 'hornet's nest' stirred, by trying to canvass for MR! Typical government servant - serving a political cause and shooting his own toe.

Have you forgotten the fact that your High comm in Colombo convinced PM Ranil that Chandrika will not dissolve the UNP parliament and inspite of this she went ahead and dissolved parliament?
