Bangladesh has said that it would use services of Sri Lanka’s newly built Hambantota harbor, The Financial Express stated.

Speaking to the media Bangladesh Finance Minister AMA Muhith said “Sri Lanka offered Bangladesh to use its newly built deep seaport at Hambantota 'which will be helpful for us'.

“Let's explore the benefit since Hambantota port users wouldn't need to go inside the Colombo. That will help save time,” Muhith said.

The fourth Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission (JEC) sessions in Dhaka, Bangladesh successfully concluded on 08 March. The SL-B’desh JEC sessions, revived after almost two decades, resulted in effective renewal of bilateral trade cooperation, according to Minister Rishad Bathiudeen who led Sri Lanka’s national delegation to Dhaka.

Mister citizen, A country cannot decide on port calls unless it has a state own shipping line. The main shipping lines decide about the most economical and suitable transit point. The out come of this decision will be very small and it will not give any effect to our port revenues.

H'tota is very impotant to B'desh as they do not have a deep water sea port. they do almost all exports to west through S'pore which is much expensive and time taking to got west. due to the war and the high risk of attacks B'desh prefered S'pore to SL. SL will be able to give much attactive rates and good service.B'desh govt and Business community are mush interested in useing H'tota as trans shipments and this is the shortes and closest sea port they have.

Great to hear that the world's third best performing nation on economy agreed to use the main harbour of Sri Lanka - which is ranked as world's second best performing economy by the IMF.

Paul, I am not defending the government, but your impression on Bangladesh seems to be negative and wrong. The excuse the Sri Lankans show for being unable to develop the country is the 30 years of war, so in Bangladesh too, people face such kinds of things. Every year Bangladesh faces devastating natural disasters like heavy monsoon for three months, which causes floods, and then there are earthquakes. So Bangladesh would have also developed faster than Sri Lanka, if they didn't have to face such natural disasters. On the other hand, the country has also oil and gas. In Sri Lanka you use cylinder gas, but in Bangladesh they have gas supplied through pipes, like water.

Probably bribed that subject minister in that regime. Not a single sane shipping company is gonna use this white elephant port otherwise.

    sanju79 Saturday, 10 March 2012 02:20 PM

Ohhh what a sad news , Lets make up minds by saying Bangladesh is a poor country and no other country will use the Hambantota port. Hope this will help a good night's sleep.

    Ajith Saturday, 10 March 2012 11:03 AM

    bigsam Saturday, 10 March 2012 08:47 AM

No - there is no commercial sense to use Hambantota port since SL is mainly a transit location and currently all other players call Colombo.

    RajasH Saturday, 10 March 2012 08:40 AM

you mean the cricket team to come by ship and play at Hambantota? Sri Lankan team can also practice at Hambantota and sail from theer for the Asia cup
