Rununu University student Indika Basnayake alias Bassa who was wanted by the CID in connection with the alleged assault on fellow student Susantha Aruna Bandara, who died at the Badulla hospital recently, surrendered to the Badulla police.

The CID was conducting inquiries to arrest him following an alleged statement by the victim’s mother that the suspect was responsible for the assault on her son.

However, the postmortem of the deceased had revealed that the death was due to an abnormality in a blood vessel in the brain of the victim and that there was not evidence to suspect foul play.

The suspect was produced before the Badulla Magistrate Yasarath Bandara Nelundeniya and released on bail. He was ordered to appear in court on 24 September. (Daily Mirror online)

It looks like most of the people, who commented, have believed what IGP said during the press conference. But none of them semms to hav an iota of brain to understand that the same IGP said a completely different thing on the previous day. Gobels Theory seems to be still working in Shri Lanka. Like Govt, some people have tendency to blame JVP for everything. God bless Sri Lanka.

His parents should be asked to pay back all the expenses of his education not only at the University but for all free education he enjoyed upto a/ls. only if we do that this type of murders by uni students can be stopped. no better punishment than that.

However bassa has done it bravely. Now postmortem report reviled. There is no threat to surrender to the police. If he was surrendered the peak time of that incident, his destiny would be a different one. You know how smart our police are.

Ban politics and unions from universities... Or close the universities if students want to do politics... Don't let them waste public money...

    Pasindhu Friday, 10 September 2010 07:16 AM

it's high time the students should know what they come to Uni and what needs to be done by them. Most of these students come from rural areas where the expenditure carried out by hard earned money of poor parents or from Mahapola. The students must know their responsibilities and act accordingly

Bassa is guilty. The Police - never guilty.

The objective of an institution such as our univerasities, is to deliver intellectuals and not to be a place to practice unionism and politics at the cost of our motherland. Whilst sympathysing with the victim, it is our duty to establish great student movements that take us forward than violence.

Gayan Samarasekara Friday, 10 September 2010 06:34 AM

University students are compelled to participate on those protests (mostly useless) during the first year. The best solution is to eradicate ragging from the universities. The central government should directly intervene and take practical decisions.

May be this is also an 'act' ? Or may be the student who died, voluntarily got hit by others to create awareness among students ?
