Barack Obama has told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas he will veto his bid for UN membership, as he tried to persuade him to drop the plans. But Mahmoud Abbas vowed to press ahead during a meeting with the US president, the White House said afterwards.

Mr. Obama had told the UN General Assembly a Palestinian state could only be achieved through talks with Israel.

But French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned a veto could spark another cycle of violence in the region.

Diplomatic efforts for Palestinian UN membership have intensified, with Mr Abbas preparing to submit a written application to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York on Friday.

Thousands of people rallied in the West Bank on Wednesday in support of the move. (Source: BBC)

Dalu Banda, first read the History before you comment. Like Tera said there was no Israel before, it is the Palestinian land they are occupying.

Dalu banda, this is what David Ben-Gurion, the first prime Minister of Israel has said as quoted in "The Jewish Paradox" : A personal memoir - New York: Grosset and Dunlap, 1978, pp. 99-100.

"Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader, I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure, God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, it's true, but 2000 years ago, and what is that to them? There has been anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we came here and stole their country. Why should they accept that? "

Israel and Palestinian should come to an agreement before going to UN. Israel should have their historical land under their control. Imagine if Anuradhapura is controlled by South Indians?

Hello Dalu Banda, whose historical land you are talking about. There was no country called Israel in the history of mankind. Jews have lived in the land of Palestine as immigrant.
