Sri Lanka’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Bandula Jayasekara has been recalled to Colombo just a few months after he was appointed to the post, External Affairs Ministry sources told Daily Mirror online.

External Affairs Ministry sources added that Jayasekera, a former Sri Lankan Consul General to Toronto, Canada, had been given time to return to Colombo but remained tight lipped over the reasons behind his recall.

When asked by Daily Mirror online as to why Jayasekera was recalled to Colombo External Affairs Ministry sources said “the information was too sensitive” and refused to comment further.

Before being appointed a diplomat, Jayasekera was the Managing Editor of The Colombo Post and the Editor in Chief of the Daily News and also the News Editor of Sri Lanka's first private radio station. (Daily Mirror online)

bandula is a great son of motherlanka. he did immense sacrifice when in Toronto taking on the LTTE in its own den. he gave da LTTE rep in canada beans in a tv talk show. great guy!when 90% of our diplomats are sleeping he is one of the very few who stood up. hope nothing bad happens to him as we wl be da loosers!

Mere Political appointment to high post has no credible foundation!!

    warnay Sunday, 04 July 2010 10:10 AM

What a colossal waste of money, and more importantly, the damage to Sri Lanka's credibility at the United Nations and with all countries in the world represented in New York. After all, this appointment was made just after the Presidential elections in January and was noted by many to be a unique (irregular) appointment in that a political appointment was made to the all important Deputy post again (continuing with the previous political appointment) in New York which has never happened before. The previous political chap also stayed for just a few months. We need to fight the diplomatic battles in the most professional way!

To offer a better political appointment somewhere else.

This column has become a forum to release frustration for those who just want to criticize the government in whatever they do. Bandula did a great job in countering actions of LTTE in Canada last year and he is a very patriotic man. He is knowledgeable and courageous enough for any job of that standing.

Bandula did his job better than any other in Canada. His services are not required in that post any more as the LTTE is now beaten. He can probably be used more effectively else where. So what is this haho about?

First time we heard of an editor of an English daily being weak in English ! Are we joking here?

Smart Aleck Sunday, 04 July 2010 01:20 PM

who is the political busybody woman behind this nonsense?

    marlon Sunday, 04 July 2010 02:46 PM

Actually Calistus, this is quite a common phenomenon in Asia. In South-West India in the state of Kerala we can find the best example. Keralites are native Malayalam speakers and not English speakers, but most of them can write (and read) immaculately. I worked with several of them while in Dubai many years ago and most couldn't speak very good English, articulation and pronunciation of their English was actually atrocious, but their written English was always impressive.
