UNP Puttalam District Member of Parliament Palitha Range Bandara says he is fed up with his party and has decided to boycott party events and meetings. However he says he has not decided to quit the party.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online the UNP MP said he had reached the decision as the party has yet to take disciplinary action against UNP member Shantha Abeysekera over his involvement in the brutal assault on Bandara just prior to the General Elections.

Bandara, who sustained serious injuries in the assault and was hospitalized, says he will attend Parliament once in three months to ensure he does not lose his seat in Parliament but will not attend UNP meetings or events.

He once again slammed the UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka and blamed him over the failure to take disciplinary action against Shantha Abeysekera.

Earlier this month, speaking to Daily Mirror online, Bandara had warned that he would be compelled to re-consider his position in the UNP if Attanayaka failed to take appropriate action against the member within.

Reponding to the concerns raised by Bandara, UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayaka had told Daily Mirror online earlier this month that a charge sheet had already been filed against Shantha Abeysekera and action could be taken only after he responded to the charges against him. Capable guy? I'd rather say a selfish guy who doesn't care about the people who voted for him

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:29 AM

UNP should not loose this type of capable guys.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:35 AM

It is not difficult to comprehend that Range has a genuine grievance that needs to be addressed by his party. But, in that context, what is the rationale behind his decision to attend Parliament only once in three months. That is virtually boycotting the parliamentary sessions yet seeking a way to earn his salary without working as an MP. That does not reflect well on him.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:59 AM

This is the result of poor leadership if you can call Ranil a leader. It is better for him to pack is bags and go. It will be a great help for the country if he does so.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:01 AM

When he was in hospital - didnt the President meet his wife? So negotiations have been going on since then? What's the package. But I do agree that swift action needs to be taken against thuggery. UNP has plenty of intellectuals,

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:04 AM

If the main opposition is like this how people can trust them and even next term PA might come for power "Suba Anagathayak" - Sri Lanka.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:17 AM

Why can't the Party take necessary disciplinary action against the Party-men who descended to hooliganism in his case? Let him be anybody. Justice must prevail and DISCIPLINE in the Party should be maintained! If the Party cannot ensure such discipline in the Party, how can they canvass for same in the Govt.? Physician heal thyself FIRST!!

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:41 AM

well said, luckily the UNP was not voted in to govern, people knew this weakness before

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:01 AM

The main problem creator in UNP is Tissa not Ranil or any other. Because of his poor strtagies UNP has lost three reputed polititions during last month. Rukman is a classic example. I don't thing anything wont remain to a new leader to rebuild if Tissa continues for another few months.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:08 AM

Plenty of intellectuals ....he .. he..

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:23 AM

Who care wether he cross over or stay put? Some of you guys here really cant stand 'Gentlemen Politicians'. There are only a handful of them left either from govt side or opposite paties. Why barking at Tissa? He wont entertain thuggerism anyway. Bandara should be sacked from UNP,

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:36 AM

How dare this man threaten by saying that he will only attend parliament only once in 3 months, just to keep his seat?
What about the people who supposed to have voted for him? Who will talk on behalf of those ppl. Whoever voted for this man should be ashamed as well.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:20 AM

I too don't understand why the party haven't taken tough disciplinary action against those involved in the assault.. Naturally the victim feels left out..!! UNP needs a makeover from top to bottom.. otherwise soon we won't even have a opposition. UNP is breaking apart not from outside but sadly within.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:41 AM

Where is the so-called leadership quality of RW? Why cannot he use his turbo-charge brain to solve these domestic problems? What is he waiting for?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:45 AM

Hope he takes a wise decission in the interest of the party and the country

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:58 AM

Earlier Bandaranaikes were allergic to UNP. Now UNP is allergic to Bandara's. (Range & Rranjith M.Bandara)

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:03 AM

strange occurances happening in the UNP party, the ministers campaign with UNP party funds, and when they get the UNP seat , cross over to UPFA, shame on you so called MPS, what a misleading bunch of MP we have.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:26 AM

Everything in UNP is same like their so called reform. how can people of the country build faith on them ( present leaders) when a concern internal matter like this cannot be resolved by taking action. where is leader and deputy leader to direct action?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:38 AM

Ranil to go. Tissa to go.. Who else??? Why are you always blaming Ranil when something negative happens? Is the sole responsibility coming to Ranil alone? Was not Range Bandara assaulted by a set of stupid party members? Isn't it the fault?? I have never ever noticed people help Ranil to build the party? It is the responsibility of all the party members, and changing the pillow to headache will not be the solution.. If someone sneezes, Ranil has to leave the leadership. I reckon, if Ranil left, there won''t be a UNP, by now.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:59 AM

Yeah, now turn the clock around.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:33 AM

    BANDARA DON`T CROSS TO GOVT.
IT IS READY TO CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION WHICH IS NOT GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY OR DEMOCRACY

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:51 AM

What charge sheet ? After committing such an indecent act, if Tisa cannot take action agaist the culprit, that shows how weak the party had become. Bandara had done much more than many in the UNP in recent times.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 11:02 AM

How silly! The myth of indispensabilty! What if (God forbid) Ranil dies?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:20 AM

It may be another transfer to the end.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 04:56 AM

Bandara is getting antsy...wants to swich camp. Darn! If not for that letter of resignation he would be there already. The old fox probably already made an irrisistable proposition.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 04:58 AM

Initial steps to join the government.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 04:59 AM

coming colors no good for the UNP

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:00 AM

Here we go ..!!!! But dont come to UPFA and ask for ministrrial post.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:02 AM

May be so, but we have to think as why this type of things happen in the UNP. No body seems to be seriously viewing this type of happenings. If the Leader is unable to look into this why there is a Deputy Leader. I think it is high time Tissa Attanayake quits as the General Secretary. It appears he is the bane of all these problems.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:03 AM

The UNP is easily helping out the Government to get 2/3. Easy pickings for MR & co ..

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:05 AM

May be this episode also may end up in Bandara joining UPFA. You cannot blame him. I am with Bandara when he queries what action has been taken against the culprits. It is a very fair query. Why on earth the Gen. Sec. and other leaders are sleeping

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:07 AM

He was an ex cop who took to Politics. He is not wanted in the govt circles either.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:12 AM

Good idea, can't wait for another election. Just 3 more to cross over for the 2/3 majority.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:13 AM

How can they think of governing the country, when they cant
sort out a straight forward matter, as this?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:13 AM

    Read the last paragraph

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 04:53 AM

ops ... this may be a another cross over

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:22 AM

Because of the Gen Secy even the other MP's may leave one by one. and at the end only Ranil, Tissa and Sajith will remain fighting each other.
Tissa is the most hopeless Gen. Secy UNP ever had.
We can see if this is howf Range Bandara who has faced lot of opposition whilst working for the party, is treated what to talk about others.
If this continues, even under the MANAPA system UNP will get less than 8 MP's very soon.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:24 AM

He is a crude person not fit for politics. These are all his personal problems. Let him solve those.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:42 AM

How can the UNP accuse the governemnt that it overlooks taking action against some Ministers, when the UNP even when out of power resorts to such lapses. It is sad that the UNP is lacking leadership and effective control over its unruly elements.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:46 AM

Thumbs up for you, sanus. You have well said.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:47 AM

    High and high jump???

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 05:53 AM

First Cader, now Bandara... way to go MR. Soon you'll have not 2/3 but the entire UNP eh?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:04 AM

May be Attanayake does not have a back bone to take further action on the charge sheet. Surely a charge sheet is served with a definite date before which the culprit has to reply.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:06 AM

This was expected.. but little late.. may be as planned.. it was expected when MR contacted Bandra when he was in Hospital.. good luck SL..

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:07 AM

Only the general secretary and leader will be left alone in the UNP. Poor state of affairs in the UNP camp. More than 30% of the ministers are from UNP. Now it is a National Government.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:12 AM

This is due to inaction by incompetent leaders. This tells us the current fate of the UNP and the need of drastic changes from top to bottom

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:14 AM

The general sec didn't even contest and like a shameless lotus eater gobbled up a UNP national list slot which could have been given to someone more productive to party and country. It's high time he's packed off together with RW and lift the UNP out of the abyss its in now.
