Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority Chairman Amila Ranmandala today said the Authority would not allow a bus fare hike from September 1 as announced by the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association earlier today.

“If the rates are going to be increased, that has to be done in a manner stipulated by the government and revisions should be done considering the commuters’s point of view,” he said.

He said the decisions such as increasing bus fares could not be done according to the whims and fancies of private bus associations. He said if they went ahead with the bus fare hike arbitrarily, action would be taken to cancel their route permits.

He revealed that several investigations carried out by the Authority had revealed that Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for bus employees had not been paid by bus owners for the past few years.

The authority had also found that some 262 private buses were in a bad condition and not suitable for passenger transportation. These bus owners have been warned and given an ultimatum to repair them. (Chaturanga Pradeep-DM Online)

Hooray !!! Good news for bus commuters. Must celebrate!

Ok for the price hike. But no bus can take standing passengers.
Every one must be provided with a seat.

Why not allow the Private Bus Operators to keep increasing the price and keep the others constant. The commuters will eventually decide if they want to spend the 'premium' for the services offered by a private bus.

The buses in wort condition are not the private buses, they are the SLTB buses.

Isn't this the same tune they play every time these mafias want to increase the bus fares? Shame on them trying to make the public look like fools.

Good move, keep it up. Don't wash your hands at the end and allow the increase on bus fares. Teach Gamunu a good lesson this time.

    Only till after elections

I made a comment about an hour back. Of course it hurts the Government. Surprisingly, you have still not published it. You seem to be using your discretion and publishing only mild criticism.

Most private buses do not isse tickets as required by the law. Some issue tickets occasional but no records of issue of tkts are maintained. Most bus crews have to pay the owner a stipulated sum of money at the end of the day. As long as they receive their money the bus owners do not care what procedures are adopted. No wonder buses race with each other or wait at intermediate bus halts till the bus fills up.
Untl the authorities a procedure to ensure tickets are correctly issued the passengers will continue to suffer.

So when Gamunu informed that he is going to increase the price you found out that they have not paid the EPF and bus is in bad condition. I have 2 questions

    1. So where were you before?
    2. will you just lay low again when they say they're not increasing the price?

I'm not supporting the increase either since they don't give proper service to commuter's. They way they behave is not appropriate and not suitable for human being not every one but few.

has anyone else noticed that there is a patter.

Private bus owners say they want to increase. -> then ministry says no -> then threat of strike and a small strike -> then ministry intervenes and allows increase and says all fares except lowest rate will be increase by x%.

    everything back to normal

and by the way this happens just close to some election or big problem. this time they both have happened.

Please Increase after Elections. i don't have money to go Kurunagala for voting.
