Australia to open door for educated Lankans

Australia is all set to woo highly skilled population from the region including in Sri Lanka in a bid to create an educated, productive work force to boost its economy, the PTI reported.

According to minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen, the government in its 'Asian Century White Paper' released yesterday, has highlighted the opportunities for the nation's growth by building deeper and stronger links with Asian region.

"Even with the government's unprecedented investment in tertiary education and up-skilling Australians, we need migrants who bring their specialist skills to Australia," he said.

Seven of the top 10 source countries in Australia's 2011-12 migration programme are in the Asian region: India, China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam.

The Indian sub-continent is Australia's largest source region of migrants, providing 23 per cent of the migration program, while 18.3 per cent of migrants come from the north of Asia.

"More than a quarter of our nation's migrants were born in an Asian nation and nearly 1.5 million Australians are fluent in one or more Asian languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Hindi, Punjabi, Indonesian, Korean, Tagalog and Japanese," Bowen said.

"This means that Australia is uniquely placed to strengthen ties with Asian nations." So the country is "increasingly looking to Asia for skilled migrants who are crucial to the nation's economy and the development of business opportunities in the region", he said. (PTI)

It all depends on the individual his ambitions and perseverance.
After all the sky is the limit. At present most skilled migrants to Australia come from Britain, India and New Zealand.

    kumisura Tuesday, 30 October 2012 01:10 AM

I dream of the day when we finally have a leadership that wishes to and is capable of utilising its educated, productive work force to boost its own economy, instead of finding every which way to disperse the intelligent and hardworking elements of this land to other countries that value our "Native sons" more than we do.

Australian giving better education, helth and other services free for migrants children Most of migrants migrated because of their chidren's future

    zorro Tuesday, 30 October 2012 10:47 AM

free education is not everything! what is after free education, if you cant provide them with jobs? So should they stay at home and being thankful for free education and get numbed? Sri Lanka does not give any perspectives for the youth of the country. The politicians are dumb and worried about their power and wealth, so why shouldn't the youth think for themselves!

Adel Mohamed Tuesday, 30 October 2012 02:44 AM

Well, I always dreamt of a better life on the other side of the wall. We have toiled for a long time mostly through bad times, and survived. Some have made it through in the west. But llife goes on in this "LAND LIKE NO OTHER". Probably its better to be here although now its a mess, "politically".

Not only roads and ports, people are also important to a country. MR should realise it before it is too late.

Stop military culture and have to get rid of Mervin & son. If not educated people will look for a shift.

    DireStraits Tuesday, 30 October 2012 03:52 AM

Exactly my thoughts too. Go to any developed country in the west and look at the names at the top of the game. You will find a huge number of Sri Lankans. Australia knows this beyond doubt. However you need leaders with some vision in Sri Lanka to be able to tap this talent. Almost all those who get elected to public office work for their own benefit hence no one wants intelligent, visionaries to come back as it will be their biggest threat to their existance. They will even sell their own mothers if it benefits them so, it is prefered to see the educated leave at the expense of the future of Sri Lanka never to return again. They may leave but they do with a heavy heart. I recently spoke with a very educated elderly person in Melbourne. His exact words were "sapa vinda vinda, duk vindinawa puthey". Say's it all!

AL Rasa Tuesday, 30 October 2012 03:52 AM

Majority of those who are commenting about good of Australia may be the people who visited Australia for 3 to 6 weeks on holidays or visiting their loved ones. Those who are residing in Australia please tell the truth with your consciousness.

    Sam Tuesday, 30 October 2012 11:26 AM

It is time to get those who can afford to pay billions to Australia instead to the Sri Lankan universities so that the poor dons can be paid a decent salary and then they can go to Australia or anywhere else afterwards.
Let CWWK's free education stop at A/Levels.
Sri Lanka Inland Revenue, education department and immigration department should work together so that those who want to go can payback monetarily if not their service.
There are thousands of graduates educated free of charge who neither have a good word about Sri Lanka nor give anything back.

harsha gunaratne Tuesday, 30 October 2012 03:57 AM

Main problem is salary control boards who set a minimum wage for every job.As a result companies pay skilled a just a little above the minimums depriving them of a decent wage to make both ends meet and allowing companies to post over 300million as after tax profits on every quarter. Why not give a share of these profits to workforce at every quarter like in Korea.
Do it and see that nobody will leave the country because we are a proud nation and don't like to be subjected to second class treatments from other nations.

    Briss Tuesday, 30 October 2012 04:11 AM

Spot on, I am sure the main problem is matter how much educated and skilled

    StarBrand Tuesday, 30 October 2012 05:49 AM

Its really sad. Most people think that living overseas is a bed of roses... it is not. It is REALLY hard to get work, and the people are really racist.. No place like sri lanka.

It is not sour grapes. I lived, worked and studied in Australia for over 5 years, and I will never go back to live there, unless for a short holiday to visit my family.

Sri Lankans do not know how good their lives are.

    jan Tuesday, 30 October 2012 05:40 AM

Aussie is a cool place sure if one is reasonable with expectations. currently jobs are outsourced to countries with cheaper labour. if you have skills that are in demand its good, if one is management type mother lanka is better in my view.

Grass is not greener always on the other side. One should take note, how many Sri Lanka who migrated to Australia, regret their decision. Many have returned home. No matter what you do, you will always be a second class citizen in any country other than your motherland.

Should we give free education? Once educated will they serve our country? Other countries wants to reap our harvest. It's time the Government open their eyes. All love their mother country and their children and for the sake of their children will be lured by the carrot.

    PP Tuesday, 30 October 2012 06:39 AM

Agree, there are only few people in skilled job but they can't climb the ladder. Their colleagues and mates remained in SL may be in a director or chief position but in AUS they will remain in the middle level after 25 years. If complained you will out of job for rest of life. Good education in private schools not in public schools. Kids will grow in western culture and they will not respect parents as in SL and after starting work they will prefer to live few kms away from parents. Often boys will get marry a girl from another culture, white skin.

    PP Tuesday, 30 October 2012 06:53 AM

Free education in public school is not necessary better than SL. You may have to send your kids to private school to get better education.

    Curious Monday, 29 October 2012 03:21 PM

When educated Sri Lankans leave the country it is easy to fool the others.

    Smurf Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:14 AM

Sri Lanka has the best talented workers in Asia, plus a high standard of ethics and values that a Country starting out with convicts would envy. If people still opt to go there, it should be on very good terms and on par with any other western national emigrating. Majority of the Sri Lankan;s feel it is an opportunity to go, but the opportunity is all Australia s unless you can cut a v. good deal.

    Rahim Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:35 AM

Not necessarily Dave(?). The people who come back usually come back out of a sense of nostalgia or because they have a business or property waiting for them here. Most people I know are HAPPY to leave this country, even the one's working in Middle East. There must be something revolting about Sri Lankan culture and the Sri Lankan people for so many to leave this beautiful country.

    shaila Friday, 02 November 2012 12:25 PM

    Rahim Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:36 AM

What is to value in Sri Lankan "native-sons"? Are you kidding! Sri Lankan people are generally unfriendly, rude and obnoxious. I doubt we have anything to gain from these native-sons.

    Rahim Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:39 AM

Yes....there is persecution for Muslims in Australia. Why are our Sri Lankan brothers so eager to please the Australian government which is hand-in-glove with Zionists? Sri Lankans should show solidarity with the poor suffering Muslims in Australia.

    Rahim Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:40 AM

What nonsense! Sri Lankans have the worst ethics out of all. And no Sri Lanka does NOT HAVE the "bestest" workers in Asia. I bet you are one of those who like to grope women.

    Rana Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:37 AM

have been living in Australia for the last 22 years. If you think to migrate into Australia, there are pluses and minuses. Pluses are more but minuses are less but very serious. It is good for money( lot of expenses and less savings), children's education, peaseful living, no corruption, every body have nearly equal status in the society, easy living etc., Minuses are you will loose contacts with your relatives, friends, cultural things, sometimes religion (buddhism), childrens become more western etc., Australia is good for lower and middle grade qualified people.

    Prasanna Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:42 AM

HI Wiji, I am living last 20 years in europe after defeating the LTTE i thought i will came and settel in my mother land, when i see the jungel lau and the thugs are in the politics . i will think twice before i came to Sri Lanka.

    kw Tuesday, 30 October 2012 08:45 AM

Utter rubbish. If you can speak good English and have good skills to do a job that is on demand, you can have a very good and peaceful life in Aus. You will not make a fortune, like some people who go to Italy do. Because there are strict laws in this country.
When you come here you will realize money is not everything. There are good schools for your kids, roads are safe, social security is unbelievably good. You get fee healthcare etc. If you are a cricket lover you can also play cricket on weekends, not using tennis balls, using real cricket gear on a true turf, just like you dreamed on your school days.:) What more you can ask for?
