Fourteen asylum seekers who allegedly hijacked a ship off the Sri Lankan coast in a bid to reach Australia have been found and sent home, the Department of Immigration Australia says.

The group of Sri Lankan nationals was detected and intercepted northwest of the Cocos Islands by Australian authorities late on Thursday.
There were 15 people on board the vessel Chejan, which was involved in the allegedly hijacking incident on October 13.
Fourteen of them were returned to Sri Lanka from the Cocos Islands on a charter flight on Saturday afternoon.

One of the boat people could not be sent home on Saturday, but the department has indicated he will be deported in coming days.
The Sri Lankans held no visas and made no claims for protection, nor did they raise any issues that engaged Australia's international obligations, the department said.

The boat had been missing until it was intercepted late on Thursday north-west of the Cocos Islands by ACV Hervey Bay.(AAP)

    Lobbo,

Interesting. There was a of a sri lankan in th enorthern territory of Australia . He was enjoying all the perks given to indigeneous (Aborginees) for a long time , claiming he is an aborginee. ( similar physical apperances) . He was caught after 15 or so years and now counting the bars..

lanka lion...no argument about their contribution to making Australia a top country. My comment was to show the irony of the Aussies turning back criminals. Let it rest now....

Lobo: You may be right but they worked very hard to make this a better place for everyone including immigrants from all over the world to come and settle down here for a better life than in their country of birth. Nearly one third of the population of 21 million were either born overseas or speak a different language besides English. Australia is also one of the top donor countries in the world and contributes immensely to the welfare of other nations as well in the event of natural disasters etc.
    around the world.

That is the reason they return them.

    Lobo Sunday, 28 October 2012 09:29 AM

lanka lion, you're missing the point. The fact is that they went there as criminals and stole the land from the aborigines.

    Nodrog Sunday, 28 October 2012 09:23 AM

Ramuk, don't you have a toilet to clean or gas to be pumped??

    RamUK Sunday, 28 October 2012 07:30 AM

Dont worry of Cardboard Lions from SL just roaring in pain and vain....

Lanka Lion - Sydney Sunday, 28 October 2012 12:56 AM

Lobo: If the Aborigines turned back the so called convicts from
Australia it wouldn't be one of the top countries in the world to live today where some are even prepared to sacrifice their lives to come .How much it has developed within the last 225 years compared to some countries who boast of years of civilisation.

Good one Lobo but don't think many will catch the meaning.

Certainly a very good development and hope this is continued vigorously.

Do we know where Prageeth is? Don't we know how Fredrica was treated over the phone by DS, but Fredrica was also refused asylum in Australia.

At the rate Sri Lanka is progressing in all fronts including HR violations, corruption, nepotism ,soon there will be a reverse trend I mean we expect boat people coming to seek asylum in Sri Lanka from all over the continent.

    Nodrog Saturday, 27 October 2012 06:45 AM

Thats common knowledge. All these 'refugee seekers' are just selling their motherland to seek greener pastures.

    Hussain Saturday, 27 October 2012 06:25 AM

All the countries are getting wise about these so called FALSE asylum seekers, I hope they inquire into all who were granted asylum and send them all back.

    Lobo Saturday, 27 October 2012 06:20 AM

Ha ha...the aborigines must be wondering why they didn't do the same in the 18th century.

    Vicks Saturday, 27 October 2012 06:04 AM

Well - the inside information indicates there were no Tamils or Muslims in that boat.
