More than 50 sites of archeological importance in the Mullativu district have been desecrated by the LTTE and used as bunkers and fortifications, JHU parliamentarian the venerable Ellawala Medhananda thero told Daily mirror online.

He added that a total of 1633 sites have been desecrated in the Anuradapura, Vauniya and Mullativu districts and that they should be preserved from further damage.

Ellawala Medhananda thero requested the President to take steps to hand over the control of these archeological sites to the Department of Archaeology for preservation.

Monuments like moon stones, and ancient fortresses belonging to 11th century have been severely affected, Ellawala Medhananda thero said. (Daily Mirror online)

If the LTTE did not respect human beings, would you expect them to pay reverence to these artefacts. Besides they were hell bent on destruction of Buddhist places of worship. Now it is time for the govt, and the public to get together and work on salvage and restoration. I am sorry to say that our Archaelogical Dept and Archaelogical laws are antiques in themselves. I am a non buddhist, but I admire these - sometimes unique historical creations, which should be preserved at all costs.

Not a new news for many who knew LTTE and their racial agenda supported by the west. but this news should be taken to international level and all steps should be taken by the appropriate authorities to restore the sites to its original status.

What is the basis of this claim? '1663 archeological sites'? Where are these figures coming from?

This is the attempt that the LTTE made to erase any sign of Sinhala heritage, in the North and East!

Let us ask UNESCO to help restore these archeological sites.

What about the the desecration of other religious symbols and the destruction of precious lives the Institution which is supposed to protect them?

    Truth Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:58 AM

This claim is hypocritical at its highest level. Srilankan government isbent on destroying Tamil Hindu and Christian archeological sites in North and east. What this government is trying to do is f convert Tamils areas into Sinhala Buddhist.

You must be 1 of those tamil diaspora who only hear stories about sri lanka but doesn't really know whats going on

Actually government forces or war has destroyed a monument in “Katsilaimadu – Mulliathivu) erected by English where they killed last Tamil king of Vanni – Pandara Vanniyan. That broken monument stone still there, anyone can visit. Except that there is'nt any archeological sites discovered in this area. Other mistake our majority community does is, considering all Buddhist monuments or archeological valuables with Sinhala identity. There were plenty of Tamils and Tamil kings followed Buddhism in past. The “Vallipuram and kantharodai” in Jaffna and “Kanchipuram” in Tamil Nadu – India are very good examples were lot of Tamil Buddist lived and ruined Dagobas and ancient Tamil literature evident are available. The religion of Buddhism existed long before language of Sinhala formed. Anyone can visit Wikipedia and check the History of Sinhala and Tamil languages in easy English

    Tissa Thursday, 24 June 2010 09:16 AM
