The Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University has suspended All Student Unions with effect from 2.00pm today. The suspension came in light of the protest march the students had planned. The students were to come in procession from Peradeniya to Colombo but the march was halted due to a court order obtained against it.
The students then gathered at the Galaha Junction and were shouting slogans against the establishing of private universities, and the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake amid heavy police and military presence. Subsequently leaders of the Student Unions addressed the gathering. Sources say that students from all Faculties and Unions participated in the protest.
The Vice Chancellor has issued notice suspending the Student Unions citing that the activities of the Unions has caused security concerns for the students and has also brought the university into disrepute. The Assistant Registrar in Charge of Student Affairs in the university has been ordered to seal all offices of the Unions and to take over the keys of the offices. (Hafeel Farisz)

why our young gen is behaving like animals? what is the issue they have in private universities ? Others shouldn’t study o what..idiots? who gave them the entry to public universities to study freely ? if you give for free they don’t value it .so make all public universities private and let these animals pay and study .then they will stop all these nonsense and concentrate on studies

In fact, what the undergraduates are doing is Denying Education to the under privileged who have AL but no place in the university to study. They are forced to go abroad for university education. The undergrads are against education of others.

Its true that these unions are behind every nasty thing that gets the university students into the news, like ragging, assault and so on. But without any unions there will be no voice on behalf of legitimate student grievances either.

The problem is that these are free loaders who get their education for free, at the expense of the tax payers of this country. Make them pay at least token fee monthly and then all this nonsense would stop forthwith.
