A/L results delayed

A A A

The release of the GCE A/L results are expected to be further delayed as the Examinations Department is still to finalise the Z-score formula on the marks obtained by candidates, an examination department spokesman said today.

“The delay is cause to the fact that the GCE A/L examination held last August had to be held under two syllabuses and therefore the department had to mark answer papers in two levels,” the spokesman added.

He said every effort is being taken to release the results by the end of next week. (SAJ)

There are two things you can do those who those winge and moan :1) Either you leave Sri Lanka if you feel it isn't for your liking
    2) Accept that a couple of days delays is no big deal!

Z score has been used effectively in previous occasions where there were two different examinations.Whatever the arguments made and trying to convince one examination is difficult and the other one is easy is not valid . All subjective arguments made on two different examinations becomes invalid when the Z score is taken instead of marks for selection criteria. Universities have conducted several scientific research studies to assess the performance of university students on the basis of their number of attempts . Using the Z score is the standardard and universily accepted t procedure. . If the authorities stick to the accurate and internationally accepted standard procedure results can be released without any delay without having to face criticisms made on examination papers. There are ambiguous questions in all examinations that is the exact reason why Z score is used to determine performance. Only solution is to release results on the basis of Z score.

Things will get better when this Commissioner General leaves in December 2011.

This time similar proportions have attempted advanced level examinations. 51 percent from one examination and 49% from the other examination faced advanced level examinations in the year 2011. According to statistical methods considering normal distribution of cohorts of data more or less equal numbers of students from each examination needs to enter the universities. Finally nearly 50 percent from old syllabus that is second third attempts, and nearly 50 percent from new syllabus that is from first attempt will have to qualify for university education according to Z score methodology. When the correct methodology is used there will be no further uncertainties and complications. According to examination department Z scores can be released in two days time on the basis of correct statistical methodology.

All the marks mean and standard deviations seem to be available, results can be easily released on the basis of z scores.

    askon Friday, 09 December 2011 02:05 AM

This not an unexpected situation. They would have worked out a methodology by the time they decided to have two different sets of papers. Finally when all the paper marking were over they decide to work out a methodology.

    shifan.... Friday, 09 December 2011 01:41 AM

so damn... Bt its da usual thing, its more than 4 months so far, wot r da officers doin, i gues they r wel paid bt they r nt doin their job on tym though thy in4md us dat da results gna b rleisd in tym,... Get us d results soon.. U all r wasting our tym dr officers...!!!

Ali Ahmed Ibn Ilyas Tuesday, 13 December 2011 07:57 AM

Nevermine if it will be released in august 2012. But tell the date accurately . Dont cheat students and country..

    Ramya Wednesday, 14 December 2011 12:11 AM

Finally both examinations get an equal probability. No need to have further delay, whatever statistical methodology used more or less equal proportions from each examination qualify for university education at the end of analysis. Giving results in two different z scores and selecting equal proportions from each examination is easier, or else putting two sets of z scores in to a single list also another way of selecting equal proportions for further education. Research oriented University academics are generally familiar with statistical analysis, hope results would be available soon.

I agree with you. Never the government officers do their job on time , accurately and afficency. This is not a strange one for us. But one this must state here that after New President,s and new ministers arrival it has been changed some thing in good side. we must appreciate their efforts.

pissed student Thursday, 08 December 2011 06:39 AM

our education system is PATHETIC. bunch of clowns inside the department whose priority is filling up their pockets and don't care about the students. exams completed on august, 4 months gone and were still waiting for our results.

    Dutugemunu1 Thursday, 08 December 2011 06:44 AM

why did they not think about this earlier. Now only they came to know this problem. If there was a efficient set of officers and politicians they should have thought on this even before conducting the exam

end of next week as in after the 9th then ???? hmmmm , typical system in sl , and they said they will be releasing it atleast on day before the day they released it last year

    Guna Thursday, 08 December 2011 06:56 AM

Yes, they should have thought about the possibility of this complication even when they decided to have two different papers. The students have been made to wait with the hope that the results would be released tomorrow. They have been spending the last few days with a lot of anxiety. The delay in the results is another example of the irresponsibility of our authorities. Perhaps, the the Ministry of Education should be privatized to improve its efficiency!!!!

    hansanh Thursday, 08 December 2011 07:12 AM

    Great !!
If can Release it Next Year !!!!

    Ramya Thursday, 08 December 2011 02:33 PM

Z score standardizes marks and put two exams in an equal setting. Z-score is a yard stick to standardize marks. Each z-score corresponds to a point in a normal distribution and that can be described as a normal deviate, z-score will describe how much the marks deviate from a mean. It is a matter of getting the z scores from both exams and releasing the results that would be the rank. Z score was introduced several years ago to standardize data, and then there are no discrepancies. What is the delay it is a matter of releasing Z scores.
