The Afghan capital woke up to the sounds of explosions and gunfire as a siege by Taliban militants continued into its second day.

Correspondents say Afghan forces have been trying to clear armed insurgents from remaining areas in Kabul, more than 12 hours after the first blasts. Officials said at least 17 gunmen and one police officer have died. Attackers also carried out attacks in the provinces of Logar, Paktia and Nangarhar.

In Kabul, foreign embassies, Nato's HQ and the Afghan parliament were hit in the first major attack on the city in more than six months. The BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul say the insurgents, who are using heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, appear to be using a construction site as a base.

The Taliban said it was part of the start of their "spring offensive" and their response to recent claims by Nato officials that the insurgency was weak. (BBC)

All the parties involved should ensure the human rights of all Afghans including the Taliban, as they are sons of soil.

Now I am in a dilemma here. When in other countries rebels fight against the ruleres - these US, UK EU and Australian morons call them Arab spring etc etc and provide them cash and arms to rebels. Then UN morons swing into action in favour of those rebels. So What shall we do in Afghanistan context, when rebels of Alquida and Taliban fighting against the Afghan rulers and their supporters of NATO and US? Can we send them weapons and cash? And also what name we should name their agitation? Can rebels oust the present regime like Libya, Iraq and Syria and can take over power in Afghanistan?

Well said brother. These thugs do create all the Muslims as terrorists. All the best USA led team destroy them including the funding networks of those gready Russians.

All such people like you in Colombo went on demonstrated when those Talibans destroyed BAMIYAN BUDDHA statue by shouting slogans in support of US forces for invasion. Now talking in this way, utterly double standards.

Is it Afghanistan or Sri Lanka. I can only see a police car at the Liberty Plaza junction and our VVIP convoy! :D
