A laboratory technician who was formerly attached to a security division was produced in Court and remanded on charges of having operated an illegal abortion clinic for several years.

The clinic is reported to have been situated at Kada Dolaha opposite the Anuradhapura High Court.

Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Ruwandika Marapona directed the police to submit a report to Court on its investigations.

Police identified the suspect as Wickramaratnage Wijedasa and said the raid was conducted on a complaint received about the nefarious activities of the former lab technician.

At the time of the raid the suspect is alleged to have been performing an abortion and is known to have been charging Rs.30,000 from each patient.
The police had also confiscated various drugs and implements used to carry out the abortions.

Police personnel led by Anuradhapura Chief Inspector Tissa Vithana on the instructions of the DIG Ranjith Padmasiri carried out the raid.

If you ban all contraceptives we'll have more and more abortions.

As a woman I can't agree. i can't imagine having an abortion myself but having worked as a nurse for over 10 years I have seen the desperate situation some women have been put in. It should be the woman's choice ultimately.
