Three Sri Lankan migrant workers in South Korea have lost their lives within a space of a week due to various reasons including suicide, an official source from the Sri Lankan Embassy in South Korea told the Daily Mirror.

The three unfortunate deaths are related to cases of murder, falling from a height under the influence of liquor and suicide. Further investigations into the deaths are continuing.

When inquired, the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB) said that measures were being taken to minimise the delay in repatriation of the deceased as the process was affected by COVID-19-related air travel restrictions.  All of them were employed in Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) in low-skilled jobs. “One of them was a member of a popular Sri Lankan music band in Korea.

It is very unfortunate to hear the deaths of our Sri Lankan youth who have come to Korea with so many dreams about their future and their families,” the official told the Daily Mirror.  Currently there are close to 30, 000 Sri Lankan workers on the EPS in Korea. (Piyumi Fonseka)

My condolences. As to the repatriation of remains, it is much better to cremate them there and bring the ashes. That would minimise the health problems. Even if the bodies were to be brought, it would be subject to the health regulations and not there would be little difference.

Do not bring the body here , cremate it there

Our folks would make a song and dance to get down the bodies. But if sanity prevails it would be better to have them cremated there and bring down only the ashes. That will be cost effective and safe.
