Importing vehicles which are not equipped with safety features such as air bags, seat belts and below the emission levels or their equivalent as prescribed by Euro IV was banned with effect from today, Finance Ministry Information Director M. Ali Hassan said.

He said, earlier, the ban had come to effect from January 1 as proposed in the 2017 Budget, but considering the requests made by the motor vehicle importers and manufacturers for more time to make the required adjustments and comply with the proposed emission standards and safety measures, the effective date was postponed to July 1 this year.

Accordingly, the import of vehicles, which did not carry air bags and three-point seat belts for the driver, front and the rear passenger, Anti-Locking Braking System (ABS), would not be allowed.

“As this rescheduling of the implementation is made based on the industry representations, the dealers, importers and manufacturers are strictly advised to refrain from establishing any Letter of Credit (LC) for the import of motors vehicles, which do not comply with the specified standards with an estimated arrival date after July 1, 2018,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking to the Daily Mirror Petroleum Resources Development Ministry Secretary Upali Marasinghe said the first Euro four emissions standard Diesel and Petrol stock had arrived in the country according to the scheduled date two weeks before. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

If we are to follow euro safety standards for the cars we should also follow them for other vehicles as well. As we all know in Srilanka accidents involving 3 wheel vehicles tops the other vehicles. There are no 3 wheel vehicles in Europe. If we are to follow their safety standards we should ban 3 wheel vehicles. Banning this vehicle may definitely resolve many issues in Srilanka, especially the millions of youths idling time can be utilized for the national growth...

    Shan Monday, 02 July 2018 09:37 AM

First of all, we must strictly implement the emission testing standards, and monitor . as we cant walk the street of bad carbon smoke from vehicles everywhere. this not only pollutes the environment but also the health of the people. I come to Srilanka once in 6 months but I feel pathetic with the amount of smoke comes out of the vehicle. since we have the very green environment I expect to breath good air compared to UAE but there its worst and in UAE very rarely see the vehicle with smoke

    Ranjith Monday, 02 July 2018 09:45 AM

Euro Standards???Why wont you clean the filthy dirty smelly drains in street first instead talking nonsense.

Something good in a bad country.

    rainbird Monday, 02 July 2018 03:37 PM

Euro 6 is the current standard in Europe. Euro 4 is outdated and ended in September 2009 already.

    Harini Monday, 02 July 2018 03:56 PM

The honourable MPs who proposed these vehicle standards in the budget should also ensure we have European standard motorways and that motorists understand basic road rules. What is the point of European standard vehicles with Sri Lankan standard brains driving them?

    Oshan Monday, 02 July 2018 04:44 PM

No more 3 wheelers?I will believe it when I see it. Tata buses won't make the cut too.

    Sha Tuesday, 03 July 2018 12:13 AM

First of all, the existing vehicle which are currently running on the road should be inspected for the features mentioned above.
