The UNP engineered the defection of Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman from the LTTE to weaken the Tamil Tigers for political gain, former UNP MP Prof. Ashu Marasinghe said yesterday.

Prof. Marasinghe said this in response to a question raised by journalists. “It was true that the UNP Government engineered the defection of Karuna from the LTTE, but we did not appoint him to Parliament. We never gave him the ticket to contest from the UNP,” he said.

“We broke Karuna off for political gain at that time but we never associated with him thereafter,” he added.

Asked to comment about the critical remarks that have been made by former Minister Harin Fernando, Prof. Marasinghe said there was no point in wasting time to talk of a person who has no character at all. (Yohan Perera)

It might or might not be true. But you pathetic UNP people didn't use him to win the war. On the contrary, MR and GR very cleverly used Karuna to annihilate the LTTE. At least give that credit to the brothers.

Very true, it was done by the combination of then government UNP and the assistance of ROW (India). Peace talks were held in Thailand and Karuna was a member of the delegation traveled to Thailand few times and they spot the weakness of Karuna, he was offered good women and good entertainment in Thailand. This changed his motor, momentum and distracted him. This was the turning point and fall of LTTE. Karuna, started to like the entertaining life, which lead to break away from LTTE. He started to given all the details of the LTTE to Sri Lanka army and finally we win the war. Unfortunately UNP lost the election and MR become the president. Mahinda Rajapaksa, paid money to LTTE leader Prabhakaran to block the vote in north and east and he won the election.

my question to the prof is, who gave Karuna a diplomatic passport to travel U.K? What did UNP offered Karuna in return to the defection?

They were to give a separate state.....MR/GR stopped it at that time.
