UNP changes stance, decides to boycott meeting with PM

The United National Party ( UNP) has changed its original stand to attend the meeting of all former MPs called by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse tomorrow and decided to boycot it today.

The statement issued by the UNP in this regard is as follows,

While this meeting was not accepted as an alternative to the official reconvening of Parliament, the UNP decided to attend the meeting so as to once again re-iterate the party’s official stance that politics must be put aside in the face of the growing national crisis caused by COVID-19.

However, the party has since learnt that the invitation to this meeting has been extended to all former MPs and other active political leaders, including those from previous Parliaments, thereby expanding the invitation from the original 225 MPs.

The UNP is of the opinion that no meaningful dialogue can be held in this type of meeting.

Instead the Rajapaksa regime are focussed on playing party politics at a time when the nation needs unity in the leadership.

The UNP stands ready to assist the government in their efforts to eradicate the COVID-19 menace that has seen our country come to a standstill.

However, in order to effectively do so, the government must ensure that all measures taken are those in line with the country’s constitution. (Yohan Perera)

All the opposition parties can do what they like with their assistance. They can keep it. Currently the President and the mechanisms are working very well. The people who are now clamouring to give their assistance only after reconvening parliament are persons who allowed the country be devastated last April with bombs. These are people who robbed the CB and brought in the 19th amendment not to mention that even some of the current parliamentarians voted for it and ONLY ADMIRAL SARATH WEERASEKARA voted against. The opposition parties know that the situation was managed well and now they want to cash in. The previous Yahapaalana government people are those who are clamouring to assist when they could do nothing during their tenure in power and proved themselves to be an inefficient and a useless bunch of politicians. They also know one thing for sure and that is they will be kicked out by the public lock stock and barrel at the next general elections on the 20th of June 2020.

The UNP stalwarts should first get together and Akila Viraj out of Sri Kotha because it now appears that he is the decision maker for the bankrupt party.

Good. Dyfunctional, indecisive and flip flop to the end. Unconditional support for the government for COVID they said. Now it is clear what side they are batting for. Shameful. Now 3/4 is likely not 2/3

Do not care the action of DEAD AND CORRUPT PARTY; UNP.

    P.Sivapalan Sunday, 03 May 2020 10:58 PM

Reasons given by the UNP for attending, and later not attending the PM's meeting it self clearly indicates that they are really not interested in finding a solution to this national crisis of Covid -19. But, only to see whether they can do something to re-convene the old parliament. When they found some others are also coming they simply decided to keep away. That's it !
